Welcome to My South Maui

Aloha and welcome to my favorite slice of paradise. My name is Jade Kawanui, and I'm lucky enough to call South Maui my home. This isn't just a place I write about, it's where I live, where I surf, and where I'm raising my keiki. It's the sunniest, driest part of the island, a place blessed with miles of golden sand and constant, clear views of the islands of Lānaʻi, Molokini, and Kahoʻolawe floating on the horizon.

For those of us who live here, South Maui is a place of comforting rhythms—the scent of plumeria and salt in the air, the gentle trade winds, and the promise of another spectacular sunset. Many travel articles will give you a list of things to do, but I want to give you something more. I want to share my South Maui with you, the way I see it, the places I love, and the secrets I share with visiting friends and family.

We'll eat where the locals eat, from five-star restaurants run by celebrity chefs to humble food trucks serving up the best fish tacos you'll ever taste.

This is your guide to experiencing South Maui authentically, from the laid-back, sun-drenched shores of Kīhei to the manicured luxury of Wailea and the raw, untamed beauty of Mākena. So, grab your slippers (that's what we call flip-flops here), a bottle of water, and let's explore my home together.

South Maui Decoded: Choosing Your Perfect Home Base – Kīhei vs. Wailea

One of the first questions I always get from friends planning a trip is, "Should we stay in Kīhei or Wailea?" They're right next to each other, but they feel worlds apart. Choosing the right one for your style and budget is the key to a perfect South Maui vacation. Let's break it down.

Kīhei - The Vibrant, Laid-Back Hub

Kīhei is the energetic, beating heart of South Maui. It's a long coastal town with a bustling, "lived-in" feel, where you'll find locals grabbing groceries alongside visitors fresh from the beach. Some guides note that parts of Kīhei can feel a bit like a California beach town rather than a secluded Hawaiian escape, and there's some truth to that. But what it may lack in resort-style polish, it more than makes up for in convenience, affordability, and authentic local character.

This is where you find the big grocery stores like Safeway at the Piʻilani Village Shopping Center, countless casual shops, surf schools, and an endless array of fantastic, affordable places to eat. For accommodations, Kīhei is the undisputed champion of value in South Maui. It's packed with an incredible selection of more affordable hotels, condos and vacation rentals. This makes it the ideal home base for families who need a kitchen and extra space, travelers planning a longer stay, or anyone who wants to experience Maui without a luxury price tag. You can find comfortable vacation condos starting around $165 per night, a stark contrast to the resort prices just a few miles down the road.

Kīhei stretches for about six miles along the coast, which means different areas offer different experiences. North Kīhei tends to be quieter and more residential, with some of the most affordable vacation rental options. The winds can be a bit stronger here, which makes it popular with windsurfers and kitesurfers. Central Kīhei is the most developed area, with the biggest concentration of shops, restaurants, and the famous Kamaʻole Beach Parks. South Kīhei borders Wailea and offers a nice middle ground—still affordable but with a slightly more polished feel.

Kīhei is my everyday South Maui. It's where you can walk off the beach in your salty swimwear and grab a phenomenal plate lunch without a second thought. It's where you come to live on island time, not resort time. The energy here is infectious—there's always something happening, whether it's a local farmers market, live music at one of the beachfront bars, or pickup volleyball games on the sand.

Wailea - The Luxurious, Serene Escape

Just south of Kīhei, the landscape transforms. The roads become wider, lined with immaculate hedges of bougainvillea, and the buildings recede behind lush, sprawling lawns. This is Wailea, a 1,500-acre master-planned resort community known for its staggering ocean views, five stunning crescent-shaped beaches, and world-class golf courses. The atmosphere here is one of tranquility, polish, and exclusivity. Everything feels manicured and peaceful, designed for ultimate relaxation.

This is where you'll find Maui's most celebrated luxury resorts, including the Grand Wailea, the Four Seasons Resort Maui, and the Fairmont Kea Lani. Accommodations are high-end, and the price point reflects that, with rooms often starting at over $700 per night. Wailea is also a hub for high-end shopping and dining. The Shops at Wailea is an elegant outdoor mall featuring luxury brands like Gucci, Louis Vuitton, and Tiffany & Co., alongside upscale restaurants.

The resorts in Wailea are destinations in themselves. The Grand Wailea is famous for its elaborate water features, including a 2,000-foot river pool with waterfalls and caves. The Four Seasons is renowned for its impeccable service and sophisticated atmosphere. The Fairmont Kea Lani stands out with its distinctive white architecture and suites-only accommodations. Each property offers multiple restaurants, world-class spas, and championship golf courses designed by legends like Robert Trent Jones Jr.

Wailea is where you go to celebrate something special—a honeymoon, an anniversary, or simply the desire to be completely pampered. One of my favorite things to do in all of Maui is to walk the Wailea Beach Path, a paved coastal trail that meanders for 1.5 miles, connecting all of Wailea's perfect beaches in front of the resorts. It's pure, accessible beauty and the essence of the Wailea experience.

Even if you're not staying in Wailea, I recommend spending at least one evening here. Watch the sunset from one of the resort bars, walk the beach path as the golden hour light transforms the landscape, and experience the refined elegance that has made this area famous worldwide.
