Kapalua's Story: From Pineapple Fields to Paradise

Nestled on Maui's northwest coast at the foot of Kahālāwai (the West Maui Mountains), Kapalua gets its name from the Hawaiian phrase meaning "arms embracing the sea." Standing here at sunrise, watching those five stunning bays catch the light, you understand why our ancestors chose this name.

This 23,000-acre slice of paradise wasn't always filled with world-class resorts and championship golf courses. For decades, it thrived as the Honolua Plantation, where endless rows of pineapples stretched toward the mountains. My tutu used to tell stories about working these fields, her hands stained yellow from the sweet fruit that would ship to the mainland.

When developers transformed this agricultural land into a resort destination, they did something remarkable. Instead of cramming buildings everywhere, they kept the wide open spaces that made the plantation special. Walking through Kapalua today, you still feel that sense of breathing room, that connection to the land that money can't buy.
