The Blooming Slopes: Kula's Farms & Gardens

The higher elevations and unique microclimate of Kula create the perfect conditions for a stunning array of flora. The landscape is a patchwork of botanical gardens, flower farms, and fragrant fields, each offering a unique window into the region's botanical diversity.

Aliʻi Kula Lavender Farm (AKL)

The drive up Waipoli Road to the Aliʻi Kula Lavender Farm is an experience in itself, climbing to an elevation of roughly 4,000 feet on the slopes of Haleakalā. As you ascend, the air grows cooler and the views become increasingly spectacular. When you arrive, you're greeted by a mystical 13.5-acre farm that promises "Relaxation, Rejuvenation, and Renewal".

Home to approximately 55,000 lavender plants across 20 different varieties, the farm is a symphony of purple hues and calming scents. While lavender is typically a summer bloomer, AKL cultivates about nine varieties that bloom year-round, ensuring a beautiful visit no matter the season.

The farm was created by the late Ali'i Chang, a horticultural master who received a single lavender plant from a friend in 2001 and transformed it into the breathtaking sanctuary it is today. His vision continues through the farm's value-centered philosophy of "Sustainable Aloha," which emphasizes a deep respect for the land, community, and Hawaiian culture. This commitment is evident in their practices. They are an earth-friendly company that partners with over 25 local businesses to create their value-added products, strengthening the entire community.

A visit here is a truly sensory experience. I recommend taking one of the guided tours to learn about the different types of lavender and the farm's history. The gift shop is a treasure trove, featuring over 75 unique products, from aromatherapy and bath items to culinary specialties. I never leave without their famous lavender scones and a jar of lilikoi (passion fruit) jelly—they are the perfect taste of Upcountry to take home.

Be sure to wander the gardens, where you'll also find olive trees, hydrangeas, protea, and succulents, and find a quiet spot to simply soak in the panoramic bi-coastal views. The lavender essential oil they produce on-site has become legendary among visitors. Many people return year after year just to restock their supply.

What makes this place truly special is how it engages all your senses. The visual beauty of endless purple rows stretching toward the ocean, the calming fragrance that seems to slow your breathing, the taste of lavender honey on fresh-baked scones, the soft texture of the lavender buds between your fingers, and the gentle sound of bees working among the flowers. It's a complete sensory immersion that stays with you long after you leave.

Kula Botanical Garden

A short drive from the lavender farm lies another Upcountry gem, the Kula Botanical Garden. Established in 1968 by Warren and Helen McCord as a display for their landscape architecture business, this 8-acre paradise has evolved into a beloved destination for plant lovers. It's a peaceful, lush world of its own, featuring winding paths that lead you through amazing rock formations, past waterfalls and koi ponds, and over a charming covered bridge.

The garden showcases a spectacular diversity of plants from around the globe, all meticulously labeled with their botanical name, common name, and country of origin, making it both a beautiful and educational experience. You'll find collections of vibrant proteas, delicate orchids, and colorful bromeliads, alongside a thoughtfully curated section dedicated to native Hawaiian plants.

But it's not just about the flora. Children and adults alike will be delighted by the aviary, home to a variety of colorful birds, and the Jackson Chameleon exhibit. A highlight for me is always the bird sanctuary, where you can see the nēnē, Hawaii's native goose and state bird. Another unique feature is the carved kiʻi (tiki) exhibit, which adds a touch of Polynesian artistry to the natural landscape.

The garden's design encourages slow exploration. Pathways wind through different themed sections, each with its own microclimate and character. The tropical rainforest section feels like stepping into a different world, with giant tree ferns creating a canopy overhead and the sound of hidden waterfalls echoing through the greenery. The desert section, by contrast, showcases the incredible diversity of succulents and cacti that thrive in Hawaii's drier climates.

I love to bring a book and find a quiet spot near the koi pond. It's one of the most peaceful places in all of Upcountry. The fish seem to know when visitors arrive and will often swim to the surface, creating gentle ripples that catch the dappled sunlight filtering through the trees overhead.

Make sure you wear comfortable walking shoes, as some of the paths are charmingly rustic and can be a bit uneven. The garden's natural setting means that some areas have roots, rocks, and uneven terrain that add to the authentic experience.

Surfing Goat Dairy

For a more lively and interactive farm experience, nothing beats a visit to Surfing Goat Dairy. Nestled on the slopes of Haleakalā, this is Maui's largest commercial dairy and a true haven for foodies and families. Since 2002, they have been nurturing a herd of more than 120 milking goats, crafting fresh, artisanal cheeses that have earned national acclaim, they've even been served at the White House.

What makes this place so special is the opportunity to get up close and personal with the friendly goats and the cheese-making process. Each goat has its own personality, and many have names that reflect their quirky characteristics. Some are shy and will watch you from a distance, while others are social butterflies who will come right up to the fence for attention and treats.

The dairy offers a wonderful range of tours designed for different interests and schedules:

Daily Casual Tour

This 30-minute walking tour is perfect if you're short on time. You'll get to meet and feed the goats, see the milking area, and learn about the dairy's history, finishing with a taste of fresh cheese and a goat cheese truffle.

Evening Chores & Milking Tour

My top recommendation for a truly hands-on experience. You get to help the farmers with their evening chores and even try your hand at milking a goat. If you're successful, you'll be awarded an "Official Goat Milker" souvenir ribbon.

Golden Girl Experience

For a quieter, more intimate encounter, this adults-only (18+) experience allows you to spend 30 minutes with the dairy's beloved retired "senior mamas," treating them to snacks and gentle brushing sessions.

Baby Goat Interaction

If you're visiting during kidding season (typically early December through spring), you can book this experience to snuggle and play with the adorable baby goats (0-3 months old).

After your tour, be sure to sample their products. The dairy has won over 18 national cheese awards, and their cheeses are featured in some of Maui's most prestigious restaurants, including Mama's Fish House, and hotels like the Four Seasons. Don't miss their gourmet goat cheese chocolate truffles, with unique island flavors like Lilikoi, Honey, and Hawaiian Chili Pepper.

The cheese-making process here is fascinating to watch. The staff are passionate about their craft and love explaining how different factors, the goats' diet, the weather, even their mood—can affect the final product. You'll learn about the aging process, how different cheeses develop their unique flavors, and why goat cheese has become such a beloved specialty.

While tours should be booked in advance, the gift shop and café are open to all visitors. Their cheese selection changes seasonally, so there's always something new to try.
