A Perfect Day in Kula: Recommended Itinerary

Trying to decide how to fit everything in? It can be overwhelming with so many wonderful options. I always tell friends to save a full day for Kula, and here's how I recommend they spend it to capture the true essence of Upcountry.

8:30 AM

Morning Fuel

I always start my Upcountry days with a stop at La Provence. This authentic French bakery is a local institution. Get there early to beat the lines for their incredible croissants and pastries, grab a coffee, and enjoy the crisp morning air on their patio. It's the perfect, peaceful start to the day. Their pain au chocolat and almond croissants are legendary among locals.

10:00 AM

Aromatic Awakening

Next, head up the mountain to Aliʻi Kula Lavender Farm. The morning light is the best for photos, and the bi-coastal views are often clearest before the afternoon clouds begin to gather on Haleakalā's slopes. A leisurely stroll through the fragrant lavender fields is the ultimate way to relax and settle into the slower pace of Upcountry life.

12:30 PM

A True Taste of the Land

For lunch, you have two fantastic choices, depending on how much you've planned ahead. If you booked in advance, the Oʻo Farm Lunch Tour is an unforgettable culinary experience that connects you directly to the source of your food. For a delicious and more spontaneous meal, Kula Bistro is my go-to. Its lively atmosphere and incredible food, from fresh salads to hearty paninis, will refuel you for the afternoon.

2:30 PM

Afternoon Sips

Time to relax with a tasting. For history buffs and wine lovers, there's nothing better than securing a table on the lanai of the King's Cottage at MauiWine. The historic setting and unique pineapple wines make for a memorable experience. If you prefer craft spirits with a stunning view, the tour and tasting at Ocean Organic Farm & Distillery is a must. Their cocktails are as amazing as the panoramic view.

4:00 PM

A Peaceful Finale

Wind down the day with a quiet activity as the golden afternoon light bathes the landscape. Take a peaceful walk through the serene Kula Botanical Garden, discovering its hidden waterfalls and exotic plants. Alternatively, pay a visit to the beautiful, octagonal Holy Ghost Church, a historic landmark whose brilliant white walls seem to glow in the late-day sun.

Beyond the Farms: Kula's Cultural Heartbeat & Unique Shops

While agriculture is the soul of Kula, the region is also rich in history and home to a vibrant community of artists and craftspeople. Sprinkled among the farms and pastures are cultural landmarks that tell the story of Upcountry's diverse heritage and unique shops where you can find one-of-a-kind treasures made with local aloha.

Historic Landmarks

Holy Ghost Catholic Church

Visible from much of Central Maui, this brilliant white, octagonal church is Kula's most recognizable landmark. Constructed in 1894, it was a gift from the King and Queen of Portugal to the island's Portuguese plantation workers, who played a significant role in farming this land. Its unique architecture and hand-carved altar are a beautiful testament to the faith and history of the community that helped shape Upcountry.

The church's octagonal design is unusual in Catholic architecture and was chosen to symbolize resurrection and new life. The interior features beautiful stained glass windows and intricate woodwork created by Portuguese craftsmen. Even if you're not religious, the peaceful atmosphere and stunning architecture make it worth a visit.

Sun Yat-sen Park

Many visitors are surprised to discover this small roadside park in Keokea, dedicated to Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the revolutionary leader known as the "father of modern China". He spent some of his formative years living in this area with his brother in the late 19th century. The park, which features a bronze statue of its namesake, is a fascinating and unexpected piece of international history tucked away on the slopes of Haleakalā.

The park offers a quiet place to reflect on the diverse influences that have shaped Hawaii. Sun Yat-sen's time in Hawaii exposed him to democratic ideals that would later influence his revolutionary activities in China. It's a reminder of how this small island has connections to major world events.

Shopping & Art Galleries

Kula Marketplace

Located next to the Kula Lodge, this eclectic and inspirational shop is a must-visit for anyone looking for authentic, locally made gifts and crafts. It's a true marketplace, showcasing the incredible talents of Maui's artists and artisans. You can find everything from museum-quality sculptures and award-winning photography to homemade jams, jellies, and fine chocolates. It's the perfect place to find a special piece of heirloom quilting, hand-thrown pottery, or island-designed jewelry to remember your time in Upcountry.

The marketplace supports over 200 local artists and craftspeople, making it one of the best places on the island to find authentic Hawaiian-made products. You'll find unique items you won't see anywhere else, from hand-carved wooden bowls made from native woods to textiles dyed with natural island plants.

Curtis Wilson Cost Gallery

For a truly special art experience, I recommend making an appointment to visit the studio gallery of Curtis Wilson Cost, one of Hawaiʻi's most celebrated landscape artists. For decades, his paintings have masterfully captured the serene beauty and vivid colors of Maui, from its lush valleys to its golden coastlines. His gallery, once located at Kula Lodge, is now a more intimate studio space open by appointment only every day from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. A visit offers a chance to immerse yourself in the soul of Maui through the eyes of a master and perhaps take a piece of its tranquility home with you.

Cost's paintings capture the essence of Hawaii in a way that photography cannot. His use of light and color brings the landscapes to life, whether he's depicting the golden light of sunrise on Haleakalā or the deep blues and greens of a secluded valley. Meeting the artist in his studio and hearing the stories behind his paintings adds a personal dimension to the experience.

Practical Information for Your Upcountry Adventure

A trip to Kula is a refreshing change of pace, but it does require a little more planning than a day at the beach. The elevation, weather, and rural nature of the area all play a part in having a smooth and enjoyable visit. Here are my essential tips for making the most of your Upcountry adventure.

Getting Around

Without a doubt, a rental car is the best way to explore the sprawling, scenic roads of Kula and Upcountry. Public transportation is not an option in these rural areas. Here are a few things to keep in mind when you get behind the wheel:

🚗 Drive with Aloha

The pace of life is slower up here, and so is the driving. There are no freeways, and you'll be on two-lane country roads, some of which are quite winding. Embrace the journey, enjoy the views, and be courteous to other drivers. If someone is driving faster behind you, find a safe turnout to let them pass.

⛰️ Be Prepared for the Terrain

The roads are generally well-paved, so a 4WD vehicle is not necessary. However, some roads are steep. When driving down long hills, such as the Haleakalā Highway, it's a good practice to shift into a lower gear (even in an automatic car) to let the engine help with braking and prevent your brakes from overheating.

⛽ Fuel Up

Gas stations become less frequent the further you venture into Upcountry. I always recommend starting your day with a full tank of gas from Kahului or Pukalani to avoid any worries.

🧥 What to Wear

The most common mistake I see visitors make is underestimating the Upcountry climate. While the coast is basking in 85-degree sunshine, the temperature in Kula can be 10-15 degrees cooler, and it changes quickly with elevation and cloud cover. I never go Upcountry without a light jacket or sweater, even on the sunniest day.

Planning Ahead

While Kula's charm is in its relaxed pace, a little advance planning goes a long way. Many of the most popular experiences, like the tours at Oʻo Farm or a table at MauiWine, require reservations—sometimes weeks or even months in advance. Always check the official websites for the most current hours of operation and booking information before you go.

Consider the seasonality of some attractions. While most places are open year-round, some experiences like baby goat interactions at Surfing Goat Dairy are only available during certain times of the year. The lavender at Ali'i Kula Lavender Farm has peak blooming periods, though there are always flowers to see.

The Enduring Magic of Upcountry

Kula is more than just a collection of farms and scenic viewpoints. It's the keeper of a quieter, more authentic Maui. It's a place to slow down, to breathe deeply, and to reconnect with the land that sustains us. A day spent wandering its gardens, tasting its bounty, and listening to the stories of its people is a day that nourishes the soul. It's a reminder that the greatest treasures of our island are not always found on the sand, but in the cool, open country of Haleakalā's slopes.

My final piece of advice? Don't rush your time in Kula. Pull over at a roadside farm stand, buy some fresh Kula onions or sweet strawberries, and just take a moment to breathe in the cool mountain air and savor the bi-coastal view. That's where you'll find the real aloha.

Whether you spend a single day or several exploring Upcountry, you'll leave with a deeper understanding of what makes Maui special. It's not just the beaches or the resorts—it's the connection between the land and the people who tend it, the flavors that come from volcanic soil and ocean mist, and the peaceful rhythm of life that exists when you slow down enough to notice it.

Kula reminds us that paradise isn't just about perfect weather and pristine beaches. Sometimes it's about the smell of lavender on the morning breeze, the taste of cheese made from happy goats, the sight of mist rolling through green pastures, and the feeling of being connected to something larger than ourselves. In Kula, you don't just visit Maui—you become part of its story.
