Summer (June, July, August): Under the Sun and Stars
Summer on Maui is pure energy. The days are long and sunny, perfect for the beach, and the nights are warm, perfect for outdoor movies and paniolo parties. It's a season of blockbuster events that draw international crowds, alongside celebrations of deep-rooted local traditions that give you a real sense of place.
Major Event Deep Dive: Makawao Rodeo & Parade (July 4th Weekend)
History & Significance
Long before Maui was known for its beaches, it was known for its ranches. The paniolo, or Hawaiian cowboy, is a huge part of our island's history. In the 1830s, King Kamehameha III brought vaqueros from Spanish California to teach Hawaiians how to manage the wild cattle roaming the slopes of Haleakalā. A unique cowboy culture was born. The Makawao Rodeo, which has been a tradition since 1955, is the ultimate celebration of this heritage.
What to Expect
The festivities kick off with the beloved Makawao Parade on the Saturday of the holiday weekend. The whole town comes out to line Baldwin Avenue, cheering for the procession of pāʻū riders (women on horseback in traditional riding attire), classic cars, and community floats. The rodeo itself takes place at the Oskie Rice Arena just up the road.
You'll see all the classic rodeo events: bull riding (the Friday night "Bull Bash" is a highlight), team roping, and barrel racing. But what makes it uniquely Maui is the strong sense of family and community. You'll also see keiki (children) participating in events like "sheep riding," which is as adorable as it is exciting. Multi-generational families compete together, and the announcer knows everyone by name.
Jade's Insider Tip: Go to the parade on Saturday morning, then head up to the rodeo. Parking can be tricky, so take advantage of the free shuttle that often runs between town and the arena. Wear boots if you have them, but don't worry if you don't—everyone is welcome. The "Bull Bash" on Friday night is the rowdiest, most thrilling part for adrenaline junkies, while the daytime events are perfect for families.
Best For: Families, anyone interested in history and local culture, and those looking for a high-energy, uniquely Maui experience.
Other Key Summer Events
Maui Film Festival Evolution
For 25 years, this was a premier event, famous for its "Celestial Cinema"—a giant screen set up under the stars on the Wailea Gold and Emerald Golf Courses. It drew A-list celebrities like Clint Eastwood and Jessica Chastain and was known for showcasing films with uplifting, life-affirming themes that embodied the aloha spirit.
It's important for visitors to know that the festival as we knew it has concluded. However, the story continues! A new Wailuku Film Festival, led by Maui Film Commissioner Brian Kohne, is set to debut in 2026. This exciting new chapter will shift the focus to nurturing homegrown talent, with categories for student films, Hawaiian stories, and Indigenous voices.
Kapalua Wine & Food Festival (July)
This is the oldest and one of the most prestigious food and wine festivals in the entire country. Held at the luxurious Kapalua Resort, this is a high-end affair for true connoisseurs. The weekend is filled with interactive wine tasting seminars with master sommeliers, cooking demonstrations by celebrity chefs, and lavish evening galas where you can sample rare vintages and incredible cuisine.
The festival attracts renowned chefs from around the world, but there's always a strong emphasis on local ingredients. You might taste Maui-grown vanilla in a dessert paired with a rare French port, or sample locally caught fish prepared by a James Beard Award winner. The oceanfront setting makes every meal feel magical.
Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Festival (June)
This is one of my absolute favorite events of the year, and it's completely FREE! Held at the MACC's outdoor amphitheater, it's a celebration of kī hōʻalu, the uniquely Hawaiian style of open-tuned, finger-picked guitar playing that originated with the 19th-century paniolo. Bring a blanket or a low-backed beach chair, find a spot on the lawn, and listen to a lineup of Hawaiʻi's absolute best slack key masters. It's a perfect, relaxing afternoon for the whole family.
The intimate setting allows you to hear the subtleties of each guitarist's style. Between sets, musicians often share the stories behind their songs, connecting the music to Hawaiian history and culture. Children run around safely while parents enjoy some of the most beautiful music ever created.
