The Vibe
Welcome to the sunniest, driest part of Maui, a true haven for beach lovers. South Maui is a region of two distinct personalities.
Wailea is a luxurious, master-planned resort community that feels polished and pristine. It's home to world-class golf courses, high-end boutiques at The Shops at Wailea, and a string of spectacular crescent-shaped beaches that are among the best in the world.
Just to the north, Kīhei offers a completely different feel. It's a more laid-back, residential beach town with a vibrant energy. Here you'll find an incredible variety of affordable condominiums, casual restaurants, and lively beach parks like the beloved Kamaʻole I, II, and III.
Best For
Wailea is the ultimate destination for couples on a honeymoon or romantic escape, as well as any traveler seeking top-tier luxury and service. Kīhei is my top recommendation for families on a budget who still want fantastic, swimmable beaches right at their doorstep.
Overall, anyone whose top priority is basking in the sun and enjoying the ocean will be happy in South Maui.
South Maui offers the best weather on the island: consistent sunshine, calm waters, and spectacular beaches make it perfect for beach lovers and sun seekers.
Ultra-Luxury & Luxury Resorts in Wailea ($$$$)
Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea
The Four Seasons is widely considered the gold standard for luxury and service on Maui. Situated on the beautiful Wailea Beach, the resort is famous for its three pools, including the iconic adults-only Serenity Pool with its infinity edge overlooking the Pacific. A major distinguishing factor is that the resort charges no daily resort fee and provides complimentary use of its poolside cabanas.
Pros:
- • Legendary, personalized service
- • Adults-only Serenity Pool
- • Complimentary cabanas (huge perk)
- • No resort fees
Cons:
- • Most expensive on island
- • Can feel like a "scene"
- • Premium pricing for dining
Grand Wailea, A Waldorf Astoria Resort
This is less a resort and more a destination in itself. The Grand Wailea is an expansive, opulent property that is a paradise for families. It is famous for its unparalleled 25,800-square-foot Wailea Canyon Activity Pool, a network of nine interconnected pools featuring a lazy river, four waterslides, rope swings, and the world's first "water elevator" inside a man-made volcano.
Pros:
- • Ultimate family resort
- • Incredible pool complex
- • Prime Wailea Beach location
- • World-class Kilolani Spa
Cons:
- • Can feel overwhelming in size
- • Very crowded during peak season
- • Not ideal for quiet romance
Fairmont Kea Lani
The Fairmont Kea Lani holds a unique distinction as Hawaiʻi's only all-suite and villa oceanfront resort. This means that even the standard accommodations are spacious one-bedroom suites with a separate living area, offering exceptional comfort and space. It's located on the beautiful Polo Beach at the southern end of the Wailea beach path and also features an excellent pool area with a 140-foot waterslide.
Pros:
- • All-suite model = great value
- • Ample space for families/couples
- • Warm service & excellent dining
- • Award-winning Kō restaurant
Cons:
- • Pool/beach chair availability issues
- • Towel-saving policy not enforced
Andaz Maui at Wailea Resort
The Andaz brings a chic, modern aesthetic to the Wailea coast. It's known for its beautiful design, featuring a stunning series of four cascading infinity pools that lead down to Mokapu Beach. It has also earned a reputation as a foodie destination, with some of the best resort dining on the island at restaurants like the farm-to-table Kaʻana Kitchen and the world-renowned Morimoto Maui.
Pros:
- • Stylish, contemporary design
- • Incredible tiered pool layout
- • Outstanding food quality
- • Sophisticated atmosphere
Cons:
- • Standard rooms feel small
- • More adult-oriented vibe
- • Less kid-focused than others
Hotel Wailea, Relais & Châteaux
This is a truly unique property and one of my personal favorites for a romantic escape. Hotel Wailea is an ultra-luxury, boutique hotel that stands as Maui's only adults-only (18+) resort. It is not located on the beach but is nestled on a tranquil 15-acre hillside estate, offering breathtaking ocean views from its suites and restaurant. All accommodations are spacious one-bedroom suites.
Pros:
- • Unparalleled peace & privacy
- • Top honeymoon destination
- • Impeccable, personalized service
- • Outstanding restaurant
Cons:
- • No direct beachfront location
- • Not for lively resort seekers
- • Adults-only (no families)

The hotel features modern, renovated rooms (especially in the new Kai Tower), two pools, tennis and pickleball courts, and fantastic amenities for its class, including complimentary bicycle use and on-site laundry.

Budget-Friendly Condos in Kīhei ($$)
Kīhei is the undisputed capital of the affordable beach vacation on Maui. While Wailea was master-planned for luxury resorts, Kīhei developed more organically, resulting in a landscape dominated by condominium complexes rather than large hotels.
This creates a market where travelers can find excellent value. The key benefit here is that affordability does not require sacrificing beach quality; many of these condos are located directly across the street from the fantastic, family-friendly Kamaʻole I, II, and III beaches.
Furthermore, nearly every condo unit includes a kitchen, which allows travelers to save a significant amount of money by preparing their own breakfasts, lunches, and occasional dinners. For budget-conscious families or groups, Kīhei offers the best of both worlds: world-class beaches and the cost-saving advantages of a vacation rental.
Popular Kīhei Condo Examples:
Kamaʻole Sands
A very popular and large condo complex directly across from the beautiful Kamaʻole Beach Park III. The property features a large pool area, tennis courts, and numerous BBQ grills for guest use.
Kihei Akahi
Located across from Kamaʻole Beach Park II, this complex is known for its beautiful, well-maintained tropical grounds and two swimming pools.
Mana Kai Maui
This is a unique property situated on the northern end of the stunning Keawakapu Beach. It's a hybrid hotel-condo, offering both standard hotel rooms and one- and two-bedroom condo units, many with spectacular ocean views. It also has an on-site restaurant and general store, which is a rare amenity for a Kīhei condo complex.
Kīhei offers a vast inventory of similar condo complexes, providing options for every budget. Visitors can find great deals on platforms like VRBO or by booking directly with rental management companies.
