The Perfect 3-Day Kauai Itinerary
Designed for families to maximize beach time and island adventures
Written by a Local Expert
Kalani MillerThis itinerary assumes you're staying on the sunny South Shore. To maximize beach time and minimize driving with little ones.
Day 1: The Grand Canyon of the Pacific
☀️ Morning Activity
Drive up to Waimea Canyon
Start early to beat the afternoon clouds. Stop at the main lookouts for incredible views of the canyon's red and green layers. Don't miss the Kalalau Lookout at the top for your first view of the Nāpali Coast from above.
Drive time from Poipu: ~50 minutes
Parking fee: $10 per vehicle + $5 per person
🌤️ Afternoon Activity
Explore Hanapepe Town
After the morning drive, head back down to charming Hanapepe. Walk across the historic Swinging Bridge over the river. Let the kids cool off with fresh shave ice from one of the local shops. Browse the art galleries and unique stores.
Tip: If it's a Friday, come back in the evening (5-8 PM) for Art Night with food trucks and live music!
🍽️ Kalani's Dinner Pick
Porky's Kauai (Waimea)
Amazing pulled pork sandwiches and local comfort food. Perfect after a day of exploring. It's casual, affordable, and the portions are huge. Kids will love it too!
Day 2: River Adventure & Beach Time
☀️ Morning Activity
Kayak the Wailua River
A guided tour makes this easy for the whole family. You'll paddle up Hawaii's only navigable river to Secret Falls. The guides handle all the logistics. They share cultural stories along the way. The 1.5-mile hike to the waterfall will be muddy but fun for adventurous kids.
Duration: 4-5 hours total
Age: Usually 5+ years old
🌤️ Afternoon Activity
Relax at Lydgate Beach Park
After the morning adventure, everyone will be ready for some easy beach time. Lydgate has two enclosed rock pools that are always calm and safe for young kids. There's also Kamalani Playground—one of the best on the island. Facilities include showers, restrooms, and covered picnic areas.
Perfect for: Young children who love to swim and play
🍽️ Kalani's Dinner Pick
Lava Lava Beach Club (Kapaʻa)
Toes-in-the-sand dining right on the beach. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming to families. Great cocktails for the adults, keiki (kids) menu for the little ones. Arrive before sunset for the best experience.
Day 3: South Shore Beach Day & History
☀️ Morning Activity
Snorkel at Poipu Beach
Spend the morning at one of America's best beaches. The protected cove is perfect for kids to snorkel and see colorful fish. Keep an eye out for honu (Hawaiian green sea turtles) feeding in the shallow waters. Around 4-5 PM, turtles start coming ashore to rest—it's magical to watch!
Remember: Stay 10-15 feet away from turtles
Facilities: Restrooms, showers, lifeguards
🌤️ Afternoon Activity
Visit Spouting Horn & Old Koloa Town
After lunch, drive just 5 minutes to Spouting Horn to see water erupt from a lava tube. Then head to historic Old Koloa Town to browse shops, pick up souvenirs, and learn about Hawaii's sugar plantation history on the self-guided heritage trail.
Best time for Spouting Horn: High tide for biggest spouts
🍽️ Kalani's Dinner Pick
Brennecke's Beach Broiler (Poipu)
Casual oceanfront dining right across from Poipu Beach. Famous for their fish tacos and sunset views. Upstairs has the best ocean views. Downstairs is the beach deli if you want something quicker. End your trip watching the sun set over the Pacific!
Exploring Beyond Kauai
Many of you will visit Kauai as part of a bigger Hawaiian vacation. If your travels take you to our neighbor island, Oahu, there are two experiences I always recommend to friends.
For the Thrill-Seeker
Coral Crater Adventure Park (Oahu)
Kauai has plenty of natural adventures. But if your family is craving a different kind of thrill—the kind with ziplines, ATVs, and climbing towers—I send them to Coral Crater Adventure Park on Oahu. It's a full-day playground with everything from off-roading in the mud to a giant "Adventure Tower."
For the History Buff
Pearl Harbor (Oahu)
To truly understand Hawaii, you have to understand its place in world history. A visit to Pearl Harbor is something I believe every visitor should experience. Taking the boat out to the USS Arizona Memorial is a sobering and amazing moment. Walking the decks of the Battleship Missouri gives perspective you can't get from a book.
A Hui Hou (Until We Meet Again)
From the stunning cliffs of the Nāpali Coast to the fiery red depths of Waimea Canyon, Kauai is more than just a destination. It's a feeling. It's the warmth of the sun on your skin. The sound of the waves lulling you to sleep. The spirit of aloha that you'll find in the smiles of its people.
I hope this helps you find your own piece of paradise here. As you explore, I ask only one thing: please travel with respect. Mālama ʻāina—care for the land. Leave our beaches cleaner than you found them. Give our wildlife their space. Treat our island home with the love it deserves.
Mahalo for letting me share my Kauai with you.
A hui hou,
Kalani Miller
