Kalani MillerThe West Side feels like a different world. Drier, more rugged. Home to one of Hawaii's greatest natural wonders.
Explore Waimea Canyon and Kōkeʻe State Parks
Mark Twain called it "The Grand Canyon of the Pacific." He wasn't exaggerating. Waimea Canyon is a geological masterpiece. Stretching 14 miles long, a mile wide, and over 3,600 feet deep. The scenic drive up Waimea Canyon Drive (Highway 550) takes you from sea level into the cool mountain air of Kōkeʻe State Park. At over 4,000 feet elevation.
The Main Lookouts
Waimea Canyon Lookout
Mile Marker 10: The first major stop. Offering a stunning panoramic view of the canyon's red and green hues.
Pu'u Hinahina Lookout
Mile Marker 13: Provides a different angle looking down the canyon. One of the best spots to see the 800-foot Waipo'o Falls.
Kalalau Lookout
Mile Marker 18: Your first jaw-dropping view of the famous Kalalau Valley and the Nāpali Coast from above.
Pu'u o Kila Lookout
End of the Road: Just a mile past the Kalalau Lookout. This viewpoint is often less crowded. On many days, offers an even clearer and more expansive view of the valley.
Hiking for Everyone
Easy: Iliau Nature Loop
A short, 0.4-mile walk through native plants with great canyon views.
Moderate: The Canyon Trail
A popular 3.4-mile round trip. Takes you along the canyon rim to the top of Waipo'o Falls.
Difficult: Awaʻawapuhi Trail
For seasoned hikers, this tough 6.2-mile round trip. Descends to a narrow ridge with some of the most amazing, vertigo-inducing views of the Nāpali Coast you will ever see.
Know Before You Go
There is an entrance fee of $5 per person. A parking fee of $10 per vehicle for non-residents. This is valid for both Waimea Canyon and Kōkeʻe State Parks. You can pay at automated kiosks in the parking lots. Check the official Hawaii Division of State Parks website for any closures or alerts.
Kalani's Tip: The clouds love to gather in Waimea Canyon in the afternoon. For the best chance at clear views, especially at the Kalalau and Pu'u o Kila lookouts, get an early start. Be at the top before 10 AM if you can.
Visit Hanapepe, Kauai's "Biggest Little Town"
On your way to or from the canyon, make time for Hanapepe. This historic town, with its charming plantation-style buildings, is known as the art capital of Kauai.

If you're on Kauai on a Friday, this is a must-do. Every Friday from 5 PM to 8 PM, the town comes alive. Galleries open their doors. Local artists and crafters set up booths. Food trucks serve up delicious food. Live music fills the streets. It's an authentic, vibrant community event.
