He Wahi Moʻolelo o Lapakahi: A Story of Stone, Sea, and Spirit
Written by a Cultural Expert
Leilani AkoThere's a moment on the ʻAkoni Pule Highway when the world changes. Behind you are manicured golf courses and sprawling resorts of South Kohala. Ahead, the land strips itself bare. The road narrows between fields of black lava rock that tumble down to deep blue ocean. The relentless Kohala wind whips the water into a frenzy.
This is not postcard Hawaiʻi. This is raw, powerful land. It feels ancient, and it is.
Here, in this windswept corner of Hawaiʻi Island, you'll find a place that asks you to slow down. To listen. To walk into the past. Lapakahi State Historical Park is not a theme park. It's a quiet, sacred space where whispers of those who came before still linger on the wind.
The entrance is humble. Easy to miss if you're driving too fast. But to turn off the highway and follow the path toward the sea is to begin a journey into the heart of ancient Hawaiʻi. Into the world of the makaʻāinana. The common people. The fishermen and farmers who were the true foundation of Hawaiian society.
Their lives were a dance of survival, community, and deep respect for the land and sea. This is their story, written in stone.
Walk through the stone foundations of Koaiʻe village, home to 70-100 people for over six centuries.
Discover the tools and techniques of master lawaiʻa (fishermen) who sustained their community from the sea.
Learn about Lapakahi's role as a renowned center for lāʻau lapaʻau (traditional Hawaiian medicine).
Understand the genius of ancient Hawaiian land management from mountain to sea.
Journey through centuries of Hawaiian history, from daily village life to the rise of Kamehameha's kingdom.
Avoid midday heat. No shade on trail.
Highway 270, mile marker 14
12.4 miles north
The experience of Lapakahi begins before you step onto the trail. It begins with sun on your skin and the steady wind blowing down from mountain slopes. This is the same sun and wind that village people felt for over 600 years. To feel it yourself is the first step in understanding their world.
This is a place that demands respect. Not just for its history, but for its elements and the ancestors who rest here.
The legacy continues today with practitioners of lāʻau lapaʻau (traditional medicine) who still gather here annually.
Your visit comes with kuleana (responsibility) to care for this sacred place as generations before us did.
To visit this place is to be given a gift. With that gift comes a kuleana. A privilege and a responsibility. It is our shared responsibility to walk this land with reverence. To listen to its stories with an open heart. To practice mālama.
