My tūtū used to tell me that to truly know Hawaiʻi Island, you have to listen with more than just your ears. We'd sit on the lanai of our family home in cool Hōlualoa. The scent of Kona coffee blossoms hung in the air. She'd point toward the vast Pacific.
"The resorts down there have the view, but they miss the feeling," she'd say, her voice soft like music. That feeling is the island's mana. Its spiritual energy. Its life force. You can't book it in a tour package or find it on a perfect lawn.
You find it in the hiss of steam escaping from Kīlauea. It reminds you that the world is still being born under your feet. You find it in the smell of sudden rain on sun-baked volcanic soil. It speaks of renewal and strength. You find it in a lone ʻōhiʻa lehua tree. Its bright red flowers splash color against black lava fields. Life persists.
