6 Diamond Head Beach
Situated at the base of Oʻahu's most iconic landmark, Diamond Head Beach Park is a long, narrow strip of sand popular with local surfers. It's a world away from the gentle, crowded shores of Waikīkī just around the corner. The beach is backed by cliffs and fronted by a wide, rocky reef.
🚗 Access & Parking
Access via Diamond Head Road. Look for narrow, paved road descending toward water near Diamond Head Lighthouse. Extremely limited roadside parking.
🏄 Best For
Surfing, watching surfers, tide pooling at low tide, and scenic walks. Not suitable for swimming due to shallow reef.
☕ Jade's Know Before You Go Tip
This beach isn't good for swimming. The shallow coral reef extends far out, making it difficult and potentially hazardous to enter the water for a swim. This is a great spot to bring morning coffee and watch local surfers navigate the waves.
7 Keehi Lagoon Beach Park
This hidden gem sits right in Honolulu but feels worlds away from the city hustle. Keehi Lagoon is a protected body of water that's perfect for stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, and gentle swimming. The lagoon's calm waters make it especially popular with local families.
🚗 Access & Parking
Located off Nimitz Highway near Honolulu International Airport. The park has dedicated parking, restrooms, and picnic areas.
🏄♀️ Best For
SUP, kayaking, calm water activities, and family outings. The protected lagoon offers ideal conditions for beginners.
✈️ Jade's Know Before You Go Tip
The water here can be murky due to its protected nature, but it's perfect for practicing water sports. You'll often see local outrigger canoe clubs training here. It's also a great spot to watch planes take off and land.
8 Sand Island State Recreation Area
This unique beach offers something completely different—an urban beach experience with incredible views of downtown Honolulu's skyline. Sand Island sits in Honolulu Harbor and provides a fascinating contrast between city and sea.
🚗 Access & Parking
Take Nimitz Highway to Sand Island Access Road. The park has parking, restrooms, and picnic facilities.
🌆 Best For
City skyline photography, fishing, picnicking, and experiencing a different side of Honolulu. Swimming possible but not ideal.
🌅 Jade's Know Before You Go Tip
This spot is especially magical at sunset when the city lights begin to twinkle. It's popular with local fishermen, so be respectful of their space. The beach can be muddy, so it's better for walking than swimming.
