Shopping in Paia is an experience in itself. Forget generic souvenir shops; here you'll find a curated collection of independent boutiques, authentic surf shops, and inspiring art galleries, each with its own unique story and style. It's the perfect place to find a special piece of clothing, a handmade piece of jewelry, or a work of art that truly captures the spirit of Maui.
3. Nuage Bleu
Located right on Hana Highway, Nuage Bleu is a Paia institution. It's my go-to for what I call "classy beachy" style. They have a fantastic selection of women's clothing, high-quality leather goods, and beautiful accessories that feel both sophisticated and perfectly suited for island life. The pieces here strike that perfect balance between effortless and elegant, making it easy to look put-together whether you're strolling through town or heading to dinner.
4. Discover Handmade Luxury at Sea Adora
If you're looking for something with a "chic boho lux" feel, this is your spot. Sea Adora is known for its stunning, handmade jewelry featuring high-quality gemstones, alongside its own island couture fashion line that's perfect for everything from a day at the beach to a night out. Each piece tells a story, and the craftsmanship is exceptional. It's the kind of place where you find that one special piece that becomes a treasured part of your wardrobe.
5. Support Local Artists at Biasa Rose / Lokelani Paʻia
With two sister stores in town, this is a treasure trove of locally made goods. I love their "Always Have Aloha" collection of apparel, and they offer a wonderfully curated array of locally made jewelry, home goods, and gifts that you won't find anywhere else. Shopping here means supporting local artists and craftspeople while finding unique pieces that carry the authentic spirit of Maui.
World-Class Surf Gear
As the windsurfing capital of the world, Paia is home to some of the most authentic and well-stocked surf shops you'll ever step into. Whether you're a seasoned pro or just want to look the part, these shops have you covered.
6. Browse World-Class Surf Gear at Hi-Tech Surf Sports
Hi-Tech is a true Maui original and a cornerstone of the local surf community. Hi-Tech has an enormous selection of surfboards from legendary shapers like Donald Takayama and modern innovators like Firewire. They also have the largest rental and demo fleet on the island, so you can try before you buy. Their staff are all passionate surfers who can give you expert advice, making it the perfect place to gear up for your own water adventures.
7. Get Outfitted at Rip Curl Paia
As one of the biggest names in surfing, Rip Curl has a flagship store right in the heart of Paia. It's the place to go for their full line of high-performance wetsuits, boardshorts, and the latest surf apparel for men, women, and kids. The quality is exceptional, and having a Rip Curl piece is like carrying a badge of surf credibility.
8. Connect with Local Surf Culture at Hoʻokipa Surf Co.
A beloved local shop that embodies the spirit of the North Shore, Hoʻokipa Surf Co. is a great place to find core surf brands and connect with the local surf scene. The vibe here is authentic and welcoming, and the staff genuinely care about matching you with gear that fits your needs and style.
Explore Paia's Vibrant Art Scene
Paia's vibrant art scene is a direct legacy of the artists and free spirits who revitalized the town in the 1970s. The galleries here are not just stores; they are windows into the creative soul of Maui.
9. Explore Handmade Art at Maui Crafts Guild
This is a truly special place and a must-visit for anyone who appreciates handmade art. It's an artist-owned and operated cooperative, meaning every piece is 100% locally made by one of its talented members. The diversity of work is incredible, from ceramics, woodwork, and hand-blown glass to textiles and the traditional Japanese art of Gyotaku (fish printing). Walking through these galleries is like taking a masterclass in island creativity.
10. Experience Fine Art at Kim McDonald Art Gallery
For a more focused experience, I recommend making an appointment to visit the gallery of acclaimed artist Kim McDonald. Her work is a vibrant celebration of Maui's color, culture, and natural beauty. A visit here is an intimate and inspiring experience that many collectors call one of the coolest things to do on the island. Her paintings capture the energy and spirit of Hawaii in ways that photography simply cannot.
11. Discover Contemporary Art at Paia Contemporary Gallery
Offering a different flavor, this gallery focuses on contemporary abstract art from both international and Hawaii-based artists. It brings a bold, modern, and curated vision to the island's art scene and is a fantastic stop for serious collectors. The work here pushes boundaries and challenges perceptions, making it a thought-provoking addition to any Paia art tour.
