Paia's Authentic Food Scene
One of my favorite things about Paia is that its restaurants are for locals, first and foremost. Unlike the resort areas, you won't find overpriced tourist traps here. To survive in Paia, a restaurant has to be consistently delicious and offer real value, which is great news for anyone who loves to eat. From a quick coffee to a celebratory dinner, Paia's food scene is packed with flavor and aloha.
12. Start Your Day at Paia Bay Coffee & Bar
This is my favorite place to start the day. Tucked away in a lush tropical garden just off Hana Highway, it feels like a hidden oasis. They serve fantastic coffee—try the Liquid Gold Latte for something truly unique—and a delicious breakfast menu with everything from avocado toast to savory bacon and brie croissants. Their cinnamon bun is legendary, and they serve $5 mimosas all day, every day. It's the perfect spot to relax and fuel up before exploring the rest of town.
Casual Dining Favorites
13. Experience the Legend: Paia Fish Market
You can't talk about food in Paia without starting here. Since opening in 1989, this casual spot has become an icon. The atmosphere is loud, fun, and communal, with long picnic tables where you'll share space with surfers, families, and locals. My absolute go-to is the Fresh Catch Plate—you choose your fish (Mahi Mahi, Ono, Ahi) and your preparation (grilled, sautéed, blackened). Their fish tacos and famous fish burgers are also can't-miss classics. This isn't just a meal; it's a cultural experience that captures the true spirit of Paia.
14. Try International Flavors at Cafe Des Amis
For a different vibe, check out Cafe Des Amis, known for its delicious sweet and savory crepes and flavorful curries. The menu spans from French-inspired crepes filled with fresh local ingredients to aromatic Indian and Thai curry dishes. It's a perfect example of Paia's international character, where diverse culinary traditions come together in one welcoming space.
15. Enjoy Southwestern Food at Milagros Food Company
Milagros Food Company serves up fantastic Southwestern food from its prime people-watching perch on the corner of Baldwin and Hana Highway. Their outdoor seating area is perfect for watching the colorful parade of Paia life go by while you enjoy dishes like fish tacos, quesadillas, and their famous Milagros margaritas. The flavors are bold and satisfying, and the location makes it a perfect spot for lunch or dinner.
16. Discover Healthy Paradise at Mana Foods
Mana Foods is more than a grocery store; it's the heart of Paia's health-conscious community, and its deli is the stuff of legends. Their extensive hot and cold food bars are packed with fresh, organic, and incredibly creative dishes, with a huge variety of vegan and vegetarian options that change daily. You can also find fresh-made sushi, sandwiches, and an amazing salad bar. It's the absolute best place in town for a healthy, quick, and affordable lunch, and my top recommendation for stocking up on picnic supplies.
The selection here goes far beyond typical grocery store fare. They have over 75 flavors of kombucha, an incredible bulk section where you can create custom trail mixes, and a bakery that produces some of the best vegan treats on the island. The vegan chocolate cake is my personal weakness, and their fresh-baked goods are perfect for taking on Road to Hana adventures.
17. Enjoy Family-Friendly Pizza at Flatbread Company
If you're craving pizza, this is the place. Flatbread Company serves up incredible organic, wood-fired pizzas using fresh, local ingredients. It's always bustling and has a fun, family-friendly atmosphere. A pro-tip from a local: you have to try the Mopsy's Kalua Pork pizza, made with local pork, mango BBQ sauce, and goat cheese. The combination of smoky kalua pork with sweet and tangy mango BBQ sauce is pure genius, and it perfectly captures the fusion of cultures that makes Paia special.
Fine Dining Experiences
18. Indulge in Fine Dining at nyloS
For a truly special meal, book a table at nyloS. This is an intimate, 14-table restaurant that offers a prix-fixe, chef's table concept. The menu is creative and elegant, using high-end ingredients to create a fine-dining experience that is unique on the North Shore. The atmosphere is sophisticated yet relaxed, making it perfect for a romantic dinner or special celebration.
19. Experience the Icon: Mama's Fish House
Often called the best restaurant on Maui, Mama's Fish House is an experience you'll never forget. The setting is breathtaking, located in a coconut grove on a secluded white sand beach. But the real magic is the food. Their "Makai to Mama's" (from the sea to Mama's) concept is legendary: the menu changes daily and lists the name of the local fisherman who caught your fish and where they caught it. It's the freshest fish you will ever eat. A word of warning: you absolutely must make reservations, often several months in advance. But trust me, it's worth the planning.
