Beyond the Beach: Upcountry Maui
A Photographer's Exploration of Maui's Heartland

Jade KawanuiDiscovering the Real Maui
Most people know Maui for the salt spray and the rhythm of the waves. But for me, the real magic begins where the road starts to climb. It's in the way the air cools and softens, carrying the scent of eucalyptus and rich soil. It's the unique quality of light at 4,000 feet, a photographer's dream, that paints the rolling hills in shades you won't see at sea level. This is my Maui. This is Upcountry.
When you leave the golden beaches behind and ascend the slopes of Haleakalā, you discover a different island, one that moves at a slower, more deliberate pace. This is the heartland of Maui, a place of rolling green pastures, misty mountains, and rich volcanic soil that has sustained islanders for centuries. This exploration is my personal invitation to discover the Maui I call home. We'll journey through the land of the paniolo (Hawaiian cowboys), wander through fragrant lavender fields and lush coffee farms, discover a thriving community of artists, and stand at the gateway to the heavens atop a dormant volcano. Forget what you think you know about a Hawaiian vacation; this is an introduction to the authentic, rustic soul of the Valley Isle.
The beauty of Upcountry lies not just in its panoramic views or perfect photo opportunities. It's in the way a conversation with a farmer at the Saturday market can teach you something new about sustainable agriculture. It's in how a simple cup of coffee at O'o Farm connects you to the entire journey from bean to cup.

Embracing the Rhythm of Upcountry
As I write this from my favorite perch overlooking the rolling hills of Kula, watching the late afternoon light dance across the lavender fields, I'm reminded why Upcountry Maui holds such a special place in my heart. This isn't just about checking attractions off a list or collecting Instagram photos. It's about slowing down enough to truly connect with a place and its people.
Paniolo Heritage
Experience Hawaii's unique cowboy culture in historic Makawao, where the spirit of the paniolo lives on.
Farm-to-Table
Taste the bounty of Kula's rich volcanic soil at lavender farms, coffee estates, and the Saturday farmers market.
Sacred Summit
Stand above the clouds at Haleakalā's 10,023-foot summit for unforgettable sunrise or sunset views.
The farmers who wake before dawn to tend their crops, the artists who find inspiration in these misty mountains, the bakers who carry on traditions started over a century ago—they are the heartbeat of Upcountry. When you visit, you're not just a tourist; you're a participant in a community that values authenticity, creativity, and the deep connection between people and place.
