Getting to Lanai: Ferry vs. Flight

Your journey to Lanai will almost certainly begin on another Hawaiian island, as there are no direct flights from the mainland United States. Your two primary options are a scenic ferry ride from Maui or a quick flight from either Honolulu or Maui.

The Expeditions Ferry: The Scenic Route

For many, especially those staying on Maui, the ferry is the classic way to arrive. The journey takes approximately 60 to 75 minutes, crossing the beautiful and often calm ʻAuʻau Channel. This channel is one of the most sheltered in the state, and from December through April, it becomes a prime thoroughfare for migrating humpback whales, making the trip an unforgettable wildlife tour.

Important Update: Since the 2023 Maui wildfires, the ferry now departs from Ma'alaea Harbor, not the historic Lahaina Harbor. Many older resources have not been updated with this information. The ferry typically runs three round trips per day, but you should always check the official schedule and book your tickets in advance, especially for weekend travel, as spots can fill up.

My advice is to take the early morning ferry. The channel is usually calmer, the light is beautiful, and you'll maximize your time on the island. The crew on the Expeditions ferry has been making this run for years; they're pros. You may see conflicting prices online, but it's best to book directly through the Expeditions website for the most accurate and up-to-date fares, which have seen recent increases.

Flying to Lanai Airport: The Efficient Route

If you're short on time or connecting from another island like Oahu, flying is your best bet. You'll fly into the small Lanai Airport (LNY) after a connection through either Honolulu International Airport (HNL) or Kahului Airport (OGG) on Maui.

The primary commercial airline serving Lanai is Mokulele Airlines, which is operated by Southern Airways Express. These are small planes, offering a unique and scenic perspective of the islands. The flights are quick, typically lasting only 30 to 50 minutes, with round-trip fares generally starting around $100-$160, though prices vary.

For guests of the Four Seasons resorts, there is a luxury option called Lanai Air. This bespoke service flies from a private hangar at HNL, offering a seamless and exclusive start to your vacation, with flights and ground transport arranged by the resort. This service perfectly illustrates the two distinct travel styles Lanai accommodates: ruggedly independent or flawlessly luxurious.
