Why a 4x4 is Non-Negotiable

Let me be clear, because this is the most important piece of advice I can give you: if you don't rent a 4x4, you haven't truly seen Lanai. A regular car gets you from the airport to your hotel. A Jeep gets you to the soul of the island.

The numbers tell the story: Lanai has only 30 miles of paved roads but over 400 miles of unpaved trails. Without a four-wheel-drive vehicle, you are confined to Lanai City, the resorts, and the road between them.

Where to Rent

You won't find major rental chains here. The island has a very limited fleet of Jeeps, often sold out weeks or months ahead. Your main options include Lanai Car Rental (Jeep Wrangler Saharas), Lanai Cheap Jeeps, and Dollar Lanai. Four Seasons resorts also facilitate rentals.

Essential Rules

🚫 Forbidden Zones

Munro Trail is closed to vehicles. Some companies forbid Polihua Beach past Garden of the Gods. Always check restrictions.

⚠️ Safety First

Never drive onto beach sand—$500+ tow fees. Stay on trails. Watch for keawe thorns.

🎒 Be Prepared

Cell service is spotty. Keep full tank (one gas station). Bring water, snacks, maps.
