The Art of Parking at Poipu

Parking can be the most stressful part of a trip to any popular beach, but with the right strategy, you can navigate it like someone who belongs here. The main public parking lot for Poipu Beach Park is located on Hoowili Road, right where it intersects with Hoone Road. This is a free lot, but it is not large, and it fills up very quickly.

Be patient, circle slowly, and a spot will usually open up. There is also a very small parking area on the far eastern side of the park that serves Brennecke's Beach. Please be a good neighbor and do not park in the lots designated for nearby businesses, as you may be ticketed or towed.

Beach Amenities: What's Available

Poipu Beach Park is exceptionally well-equipped, which is one of the reasons it's so family-friendly. The central hub of the park is the main pavilion building, which is located just to the left of the center of the park as you face the ocean. Here you will find the main restrooms, outdoor showers, and drinking fountains. The showers are perfect for rinsing off the salt and sand before you head to your next destination.

Scattered throughout the park's expansive five-and-a-half acres of grassy lawn are numerous picnic tables and covered pavilions, many with BBQ grills available for public use. Behind the main beach area, you'll find a large, community-built playground that is a favorite for keiki who need a break from the water. The entire park is connected by paved walkways, making it accessible for wheelchairs and strollers.

Food and Drink: From Beach Snacks to Fine Dining

After a few hours in the sun and surf, you're going to be hungry. Poipu offers a fantastic range of dining options to suit any taste or budget, from casual beachside snacks to world-class cuisine.

On-Site Classic

Brennecke's Beach Broiler is a Poipu institution, located directly across the street from the park. The main draw is its second-floor, open-air dining room, which offers an unbeatable view of the beach and is the perfect spot for a sunset Mai Tai and some pupus (appetizers). The Ono fish and chips are a consistently good choice. While reviews on some of the more elaborate dinner entrees can be mixed, the experience and the view make it a must-do at least once.

Casual and Authentic

For a more authentic and budget-friendly lunch, take a short drive into historic Old Koloa Town. The area has become a hub for fantastic food trucks. My personal recommendations are Porky's Kauai, which serves up incredible Hawaiian-style pulled pork hot dogs and grilled cheese, and Kickshaws, known for its inventive gourmet burgers and tater tot creations.
