From Lihue or Lihue Airport

The drive takes about 15-20 minutes and offers beautiful mountain views. Head north on Kuhio Highway (Highway 56). In Hanamaulu, just before Wilcox Medical Center, turn left onto Maalo Road (Highway 583). You'll see a sign pointing toward the falls.

Follow this scenic road uphill for about 3-4 miles as it winds past old sugar cane fields. The road ends at the Wailua Falls lookout and parking area. The drive itself is part of the experience, showing you Kauai's agricultural history and interior beauty.

Drive south on Kuhio Highway through Kapaa. After crossing the main Wailua River bridge, look for Maalo Road on your right in Hanamaulu. Turn right and follow the road to its end.

The biggest challenge at Wailua Falls is often finding a parking spot. The designated lot is tiny, with room for only a handful of cars. It sits right above the falls, offering immediate access to the best viewpoint.

Peak Times to Avoid

Between 10 AM and 2 PM, tour vans and the majority of visitors arrive. The lot fills up extremely quickly during these hours. You might spend 30 minutes or more waiting for a space.

Best Strategy for Success

Arrive early in the morning before 9 AM or later in the afternoon after 3 PM. Early morning visits not only help with parking but also offer the best chance to see the famous rainbow. The light is softer, and fewer people means you can take your time enjoying the view.

Roadside Parking Caution

If the lot is full, you'll see cars parked along Maalo Road's narrow shoulder. Be extremely careful if you choose this option. Pull completely off the pavement and watch for traffic. The road is winding and drivers may not expect pedestrians.
