Kalani MillerA Love Letter to the Waters of Hawaiʻi Island
I'll never forget the first time I paddled out at dawn in Kealakekua Bay. The water was like glass. The only sound was my board cutting through the surface. Then, a pod of nai'a (dolphins) surfaced just yards away. Their sleek bodies caught the first rays of sun. It wasn't just a beautiful moment. It was a reminder that when you enter the ocean here, you're entering a sacred, living world. It's a feeling that has guided my life and my respect for the kai (ocean) ever since.
As someone who has explored coastlines around the globe, the Big Island remains my touchstone, my home. What makes this island so unique for water lovers is its incredible duality. On one side, you have the Kona Coast, the island's gentle giant. Shielded from the trade winds by the colossal mountains of Mauna Loa and Hualālai, the leeward side is blessed with sun-drenched days and remarkably calm, crystal-clear waters. This is the epicenter for snorkeling, diving, and easy-going family fun.
On the other side, you have the Hilo Coast, the island's wild, verdant heart. The windward side is fed by constant rain and powerful rivers that carve through the land. This creates a dramatic coastline of lush rainforests, thundering waterfalls, and more dynamic, adventurous paddling conditions.
