Getting Here & Park Essentials

Getting to Kahaluʻu Beach Park is straightforward. The address is 78-6702 Alii Drive, Kailua-Kona, HI 96740. From Kona town, head south on Alii Drive for about 5 miles. The park sits right along the coast, and you'll see the pavilions and parking area on your right.

🗺️ Location Details

  • Address: 78-6702 Alii Drive, Kailua-Kona, HI 96740
  • Distance from Kona: 5 miles south
  • Driving time: 10-15 minutes from downtown
  • Landmark: Look for pavilions on ocean side

🕐 Park Hours

  • Park Access: Daily, dawn to dusk
  • Lifeguards: 9:30 AM - 4:45 PM daily
  • Education Center: Tue-Sat, 9 AM - 3 PM
  • Monthly Closure: First Thu until 10 AM

⚠️ Important Timing Note

The park has a delayed opening until 10:00 AM on the first Thursday of every month for maintenance. Plan around this if you're visiting during the first week of the month.

Annual Coral Spawning Closure

Even more important is the annual closure in May. The entire bay closes to all water activities for about one week to allow the cauliflower coral to spawn undisturbed. This conservation measure, started in 2018, has been incredibly successful. The number of coral colonies has grown from just six in 2017 to hundreds today.

🐠 Conservation Success Story

The specific dates change each year, but closure is typically mid-May. Check with the park before your visit if you're traveling during this time. This closure has allowed coral colonies to multiply from 6 to hundreds!

Park Facilities

The park offers everything you need for a comfortable day at the beach. There are clean restrooms and outdoor showers for rinsing off saltwater. Multiple picnic pavilions provide shade, and each has tables and BBQ grills if you want to cook lunch. The facilities are ADA accessible, making the park welcoming for visitors with mobility challenges.

Parking: What You Need to Know

Entry to the park itself is free, but parking now requires payment. The fee structure covers a 4-hour block, which is usually plenty of time for a good snorkel session and lunch. Bring quarters or be prepared to pay with a credit card at the parking stations.

💰 Parking Fees

  • 4-Hour Block: $3.00
  • Payment Methods: Quarters or Credit Card
  • Validation: Display ticket on dashboard

Timing Strategy

  • Before 9 AM: Easy parking
  • 9-10 AM: Filling up fast
  • After 10 AM: Cars circling
  • Peak Season: Arrive earlier
  • Weekends: Most crowded

🚗 Pro Parking Tips

  • • On busy days, cars start circling by 10 AM looking for spots
  • • Getting here early saves stress and gives you the best snorkeling conditions
  • • Have quarters ready or ensure your credit card works at the machine
  • • Park in designated spaces only - enforcement is active

Gearing Up for the Bay - A Rental Guide

You have two options for snorkel gear: bring your own or rent locally. I always recommend renting if you're flying in—it saves luggage space and ensures you get properly maintained equipment. Plus, local shops know the conditions here and can give you gear that works best in Hawaiian waters.

🎭 Gear Fitting Tips

When choosing gear, prioritize mask fit over everything else. A leaky mask will ruin your experience faster than any other equipment failure. Don't be shy about trying on multiple masks until you find one that seals comfortably around your face.

  • • Test mask seal by placing against face without strap
  • • Inhale gently - mask should stay in place
  • • No hair should be trapped under the seal
  • • Fins should be snug but not painfully tight
