Expanding your Hawaiian adventure beyond the bay
Written by a Local Expert
Kalani MillerAfter a morning of swimming with honu and exploring the reef, you're going to work up an appetite. Luckily, some of the best food on the Big Island sits within minutes of the bay. From casual beachside grills to authentic local poke shops, your post-snorkel dining options are as memorable as your underwater encounters.
Location: Right next door at Magic Sands Beach
My go-to for that perfect post-snorkel meal. You can literally walk there in your board shorts. Their fish tacos are made with fish caught that morning, and watching the sunset from their deck with a cold beer is the perfect way to end a day at the beach.
Style: Authentic local poke shop
For authentic local flavor, this isn't a tourist trap—it's where locals go when they want the real thing. The ahi is cut thick, the seasonings are perfect, and the portions are generous enough to satisfy your post-swimming hunger.
Specialty: Freshest poke on the island
Another local favorite for some of the freshest poke on the island. Like Da Poke Shack, this is where locals go for authentic flavors. The fish is incredibly fresh and the traditional preparations honor Hawaiian culinary traditions.
Style: Local institution since decades
If you want a proper sit-down dinner, Quinn's has been a local institution for decades. Classic Kona dining with ocean views and a menu that has satisfied locals and visitors for generations. Great for those wanting a more substantial meal.
Style: Upscale island dining
Huggo's gives you that upscale island vibe with consistently good food and strong drinks. Perfect for celebrating a special day of snorkeling or when you want to dress up a bit after your beach adventure.
While Kahaluʻu is the undisputed champion for beginner snorkeling, the Big Island offers incredible diversity for underwater explorers and land adventurers alike. From world-class snorkeling sites to unique island experiences, your Hawaiian adventure is just beginning.
More advanced snorkelers should consider the hike down to Kealakekua Bay, where Captain Cook met his end and the coral formations are some of the most pristine in Hawaii. The snorkeling there is spectacular, but the access requires a challenging hike or a kayak trip.
For an easier alternative, Hōnaunau Bay (locally called Two Step) offers excellent snorkeling with easy lava-rock entry. The coral formations there are different from Kahaluʻu, and you'll see larger pelagic fish that prefer the deeper, more open water.
Experience the raw power of creation at one of the world's most active volcanic systems. From lava tubes to steam vents, witness the geological forces that created the Hawaiian Islands. Plan a full day for this incredible experience.
The world's premier stargazing destination sits right here on the Big Island. Mauna Kea's summit offers crystal-clear views of the universe from one of Earth's best astronomical sites. Evening tours available from Kona.
The Big Island offers world-class hiking from easy coastal walks to challenging summit attempts. Mauna Loa, the world's largest volcano by volume, provides epic adventures for serious hikers seeking high-altitude challenges.
Experience the world's only commercial coffee grown in the USA. Tour family-owned farms, learn about coffee cultivation, and taste some of the world's most prized coffee right where it's grown in the rich volcanic soil.
My adventures often take me across the islands, and if your trip includes a stop on Oʻahu, there are some experiences that perfectly complement the peaceful meditation of snorkeling at Kahaluʻu.
I can't say enough about Coral Crater Adventure Park. Their ziplines, ATVs, and adventure tower are an absolute blast for the whole family and a great way to see the island from a different perspective. It's the kind of adrenaline rush that perfectly complements the peaceful meditation of snorkeling.
For a day of profound history and reflection, no trip to Hawaii is complete without paying respects at the Pearl Harbor National Memorial. It's a powerful, moving experience that connects you to a pivotal moment in world history and the enduring spirit of peace that defines modern Hawaii.
Experience the legendary waves of the North Shore, from watching world-class surfers at Pipeline to learning to surf at beginner-friendly beaches. The contrast between Oʻahu's powerful waves and Kahaluʻu's gentle snorkeling shows Hawaii's incredible diversity.
The iconic Diamond Head hike offers panoramic views of Honolulu and the Pacific. This moderate hike takes you inside an ancient volcanic crater and rewards you with some of the most photographed views in Hawaii. Early morning hikes avoid crowds and heat.
Whether you spend one day or one week at Kahaluʻu, you'll leave with more than just memories of colorful fish and graceful turtles. You'll carry with you the mana of a place where the ocean and the land, the ancient and the modern, the sacred and the everyday all flow together in perfect harmony.
Moments of wonder watching honu glide through ancient waters, colorful fish dancing in coral gardens.
Understanding of conservation, respect for sacred places, and the power of education and aloha.
The responsibility to protect these precious places for future generations through respectful visiting.
Mahalo for visiting our special place. Swim with respect, leave only bubbles, and take only memories. The reef will be here for your children and their children, but only if we all do our part to protect it.
A hui hou (until we meet again),
