Discover the Sacred Arts of Lomilomi, Plant Medicine, and Ancestral Wisdom

Jade KawanuiThe Sacred Art of Lomilomi
Lomilomi means "to knead or rub," but that's like saying hula is just dancing. Real lomilomi starts with pule (prayer) and creates sacred space for healing. The practitioner becomes a vessel, using flowing strokes with hands, forearms, and elbows to release both physical tension and blocked energy.
I remember my first traditional lomilomi with Kumu Mālia Helelā. She explained that each stroke carries mana (life force) and intention. "We're not just working on muscles," she told me. "We're helping your whole being remember how to flow in harmony."
Every lomilomi treatment begins with hoʻomaka—a sacred opening ritual. The practitioner sets intention, says prayers, and creates a healing space where both physical and spiritual transformation can occur. This isn't just bodywork—it's a return to wholeness.
Healing Plants and Forgiveness
Lāʻau Lapaʻau, our traditional plant medicine, connects healing to our deep relationship with nature. Practitioners harvest native plants like anti-inflammatory noni and calming ʻawa (kava) with prayer and respect. The healing begins before the treatment even starts.
Then there's Hoʻoponopono, our practice of making things right through forgiveness. Modern versions use four simple phrases: "I'm sorry," "Please forgive me," "Thank you," and "I love you." Try it while soaking in warm mineral springs—the combination is powerful.
🌿 Native Plant Medicine
Noni for inflammation, ʻawa for calming nerves, kukui for skin healing, and mamaki for internal cleansing—each plant carries specific healing properties.
🙏 Pule (Prayer)
Every healing session begins with prayer to connect with divine energy and set sacred intention for the work ahead.

The practice of making things right through forgiveness, using the four healing phrases to release stuck emotions and restore harmony.
🌊 Mana Flow
The practitioner channels life force energy through flowing movements that mirror ocean waves and natural rhythms.
Sacred Elements from Our Land
Many authentic treatments use ingredients that carry spiritual meaning and connect you to our volcanic homeland:
ʻAlaea (Volcanic Red Clay)
Holds the mana of our volcanic earth. This sacred clay doesn't just color our famous red salt. It's used in purification ceremonies and healing wraps to draw out toxins and ground your energy.
Kī (Ti Leaf)
Protects and blesses. Sacred to our gods Lono and Laka, these large, cool leaves soothe sunburns and calm inflammation in traditional wraps while providing spiritual protection.
Pōhaku (Heated Lava Stones)
Transfer the grounding energy of our volcanic homeland. When warmed and placed on your body, they melt tension while connecting you to the earth's power and ancient wisdom.

Respect for Protocol
Traditional healers follow specific protocols, begin with prayer, and create sacred space for healing to occur.
Community Connection
Authentic healers are recognized by and serve the Hawaiian community, not just visitors seeking exotic experiences.
Teaching & Sharing
Many authentic practitioners also teach and share knowledge to ensure these traditions continue for future generations.
Remember: Traditional healing is sacred. Approach these practices with respect, openness, and understanding that you're receiving a gift passed down through generations of Hawaiian families.
