Maui's Legendary Roads
The Magic Isle's most breathtaking drives through paradise
The Magic Isle's Legendary Roads
Maui's roads are the stuff of legend, each offering a distinct personality. From the world-famous jungle passage to Hāna to the celestial climb up Haleakalā, these drives are essential chapters in the story of the Magic Isle.
The Road to Hāna: A Pilgrimage into the Rainforest
The Road to Hāna is arguably the most famous scenic drive in all of Hawaiʻi, but it is also the most misunderstood. It is not a highway in the conventional sense. It is a 64.4-mile-long meditation. With over 600 curves and 59 one-lane bridges, the drive is a lesson in patience and presence. To treat it as a race to the finish line—the sleepy town of Hāna—is to miss the point entirely.
The true destination is the journey itself: a slow, sensory immersion into a world of cascading waterfalls, fragrant rainforests, and breathtaking coastal cliffs. Plan for a full 10 to 12-hour day, and begin your journey from the north shore town of Pāʻia, your last reliable stop for a full tank of gas and supplies.

Moʻolelo & Mana (Stories & Spirit)
This landscape is woven with moʻolelo (stories, legends) that give it deep spiritual resonance. Hāna itself is said to be the birthplace of the powerful demigod Maui. The freshwater caves at Waiʻānapanapa are the setting for the tragic legend of Princess Popoalaea, and the fertile Keʻanae Peninsula was blessed by the god Kāne.
The Adventurer's Toolkit
- • Start by 7:00 a.m. to avoid tour vans and crowds
- • Pack lunch, water, bug spray, and cash for stands
- • Wear sturdy shoes for mud and water
- • Leave Kīpahulu district by 3:00 p.m. to avoid driving in dark
- • Advance reservations mandatory for Waiʻānapanapa State Park
Haleakalā Highway: The Drive to the House of the Sun
The drive up Haleakalā is a journey to another world. In just 37 miles, the Haleakalā Highway (Routes 37, 377, and 378) climbs from the warm shores of Maui to the cold, windswept summit at 10,023 feet. You will pass through as many distinct ecological zones as you would driving from Mexico to Canada.
Key Stops & Lookouts
Major Stops
- • Hosmer Grove (7,000 ft) - Unique forest & birdwatching
- • Leleiwi Overlook (8,800 ft) - Brocken spectre phenomenon

Moʻolelo & Mana
Haleakalā means "House of the Sun." Its most famous moʻolelo tells of the demigod Maui snaring the sun's rays with rope made from his sister's hair, forcing the sun to move more slowly across the sky to give the islands longer days.
Essential Tips
- • Sunrise viewing requires advance reservations (60 days out)
- • Temperature 30°F cooler at summit - bring warm layers
- • High altitude may cause dizziness - stay hydrated
- • Watch for fog and cyclists on downhill tours
- • Drones strictly prohibited within all park areas

The West Maui Circle: The "Other" Road to Hāna
For the truly adventurous and confident driver, the drive around the West Maui Mountains offers a thrilling, and at times harrowing, alternative to the Road to Hāna. This is not a journey for the faint of heart. Known locally as the Kahekili Highway (Route 340), parts of this road are narrow, winding, and cling precariously to cliff edges with no guardrails.
Important: Most rental car agreements strictly prohibit driving on this route. Doing so is at your own risk and violates rental contracts.
