Kauai's Waimea Canyon - Grand Canyon of the Pacific

Kauaʻi Garden Isle

Grand vistas and ancient beauty on the oldest inhabited Hawaiian island

The Garden Isle's Grand Vistas

Kauaʻi's roads don't circle the island. The impassable Nāpali Coast creates a natural barrier. Instead, the island offers two main, world-class scenic drives that head in opposite directions from the south: one into the heart of a colossal canyon, the other to the serene beaches of the North Shore.

Waimea Canyon & Kōkeʻe Drive: The Grand Canyon of the Pacific

This is a drive of staggering scale and beauty. Waimea Canyon Drive (Highway 550) takes you from the sunny, historic town of Waimea on the west coast up 4,000 feet in elevation along the rim of what Mark Twain famously called "The Grand Canyon of the Pacific." The canyon is a spectacle of geology, over 10 miles long and 3,000 feet deep.

Key Stops & Lookouts
  • • Red Dirt Waterfall - Brilliant red soil cascades
  • • Waimea Canyon Lookout (mile 10) - Main canyon views
  • • Puʻu Hinahina Lookout (mile 13.5) - Waipoʻo Falls
  • • Kalalau Lookout (mile 18) - Nāpali Coast views
  • • Puʻu o Kila Lookout (mile 19) - End of road
Moʻolelo & Mana

The area around Waimea is steeped in the legends of the Menehune, a mythical race of small, industrious builders. The famous Kīkīaola aqueduct near Waimea town was said to be built by these master craftsmen in a single night.

Essential Tips: No gas stations in canyon - fill up in Waimea. Weather at 4,000 feet can be dramatically different from coast. Cell service extremely limited.

North Shore Drive: Tunnels of Trees and Turquoise Bays

The drive along Kauaʻi's North Shore is a journey into a postcard of "old Hawaiʻi." This relatively short stretch of the Kūhiō Highway (Route 560) from Princeville to Hāʻena State Park is defined by its iconic one-lane bridges, verdant taro fields, and some of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

Key Stops & Lookouts
  • • Hanalei Valley Overlook - Taro field panorama
  • • Kīlauea Point - Historic lighthouse & seabirds
  • • Hanalei Town - Charming historic pier
  • • Hāʻena State Park - Keʻe Beach
  • • Kalalau Trail - World-famous 11-mile hike
One-Lane Bridge Etiquette

The local etiquette is to yield to oncoming traffic, allowing about five to seven cars to cross before it's your turn. Be patient and give a friendly shaka.
