The Ultimate Deep Water Adventure

There's an undeniable allure to heading out into the deep blue waters off Oahu's coast, where the ocean floor drops off dramatically not far from shore. This is the realm of pelagic giants, powerful fish that promise an unforgettable battle. The thrill of the chase, the stunning offshore scenery with Oahu's volcanic mountains as a backdrop, and the potential to land a true trophy fish make deep sea sport fishing a premier attraction.

Oahu's waters are legendary, having produced some truly remarkable catches, including an 1805-pound Pacific Blue Marlin, one of the largest ever caught on rod and reel. The primary targets for deep-sea anglers here include the majestic Marlin (Pacific Blue, Striped, and occasionally Black), the powerful Ahi (Yellowfin Tuna), the acrobatic Mahi Mahi (Dorado or Dolphinfish), and the speedy Ono (Wahoo). Other catches can include Spearfish and Skipjack Tuna (Aku).

Most charters depart from Kewalo Basin Harbor, conveniently located just minutes from Waikiki, or from Haleiwa Small Boat Harbor on the famed North Shore. From these points, experienced captains navigate to productive fishing grounds, which can include offshore FADs (Fish Aggregating Devices) that attract baitfish and predators, the renowned Penguin Banks (an underwater plateau), and other underwater structures like "The Pinnacle" where upwelling currents congregate bait.

🐬 Mahi Mahi

Acrobatic fighters with brilliant colors. Excellent eating and abundant year-round, especially winter/spring.

Ono (Wahoo)

Lightning-fast with razor-sharp teeth. Known for long, blistering runs. More common in cooler months.

Choosing Your Charter

Selecting the right charter is crucial for a successful and enjoyable deep-sea fishing trip. The experience and local knowledge of the captain and crew are paramount. They understand the local waters, fish behavior, and the techniques that yield results. Many crews are comprised of local fishermen who have spent their lives on these waters.

Peak Season: June-August for giant Ahi. Blue Marlin best in summer-fall. Year-round fishing available.

Early morning departures often have calmer seas and better fishing conditions.

Private vs. Shared Charters

Private Charter: Booking the entire boat for your group offers maximum flexibility in terms of target species, fishing time, and overall experience. It's more expensive but ideal for families or groups wanting a personalized trip.

Shared (or "Party") Charters: More budget-friendly, as you pay per person and share the boat with other anglers. Great way to meet fellow fishing enthusiasts and learn from experienced anglers.

Trip Duration Options

Half Day (4-6 hours)

Perfect for beginners or those with limited time. Good chance for smaller pelagics and some big game.

¾ Day (6-8 hours)

More time to reach distant grounds and wait for the bite. Better odds for trophy fish.

Full Day (8-12 hours)

Maximum time on the water. Best chance for multiple species and trophy catches.

Generally, the longer you fish, the better your odds of success, especially for big game, as the "bite" can move, and sometimes it takes time to reach distant fishing grounds. Most Oahu fishing charters include all necessary fishing equipment: rods, reels, tackle, lures, and bait. Ice and a cooler for drinks are also typically provided.
