I still remember the feeling — the warm Maui sun on my back, the scent of salt and plumeria in the air, and the gentle push of my father's hands on the tail of a big, soft surfboard. I was five years old and the tiny waves at The Cove in Kihei felt like mountains. That first glide is a memory that becomes part of you.

Maui isn't just a place to surf. It's a place to connect with the ocean, to challenge yourself, and to experience the true spirit of aloha. Whether you're a first-timer wondering where to start, or an experienced surfer searching for your next legendary wave — this guide has everything you need.

📅 Understanding Maui's Surf Seasons

Maui is a year-round surfing destination because it's perfectly positioned to receive wave energy from two different parts of the world at opposite times of the year. The ocean here has a pulse — learning its rhythm is the first step to a great surf trip.

❄️ North Shore Winter (November – March)

Expert Surfers Only

Powerful storms across the North Pacific create massive swells. Waves average 8–20 ft, breaking over sharp shallow coral reefs. For 99% of visitors, this is a spectator sport. The waves at Honolua Bay and Jaws (Peʻahi) are world-class but extremely dangerous.

🌊 8–70+ ft waves 🌡️ Water: ~75°F 🤿 Wetsuit or rash guard recommended

☀️ South Shore Summer (June – August)

🏆 Best for Beginners

Southern Hemisphere winter storms send long swells north. By the time they reach Maui's south shores (Kihei, Wailea, Lahaina), the energy has organized into perfect, gentle waves. The prime time for lessons — smooth, forgiving waves 3–8 ft. Water is a balmy 80°F.

🌊 3–8 ft waves 🌡️ Water: ~80°F 🎓 Perfect for lessons

🌸 Shoulder Seasons (Spring & Fall)

Local Favorite

April–May and September–October are a local favorite. Smaller, cleaner waves with far fewer crowds. Waves 3–10 ft offering something for everyone. The shoulder seasons offer the ultimate flexibility — explore different coasts and find your perfect wave.

🌊 3–10 ft waves 🌡️ Water: 77–79°F 👥 Fewer crowds

🌊 Beginner Surf Spots: Where to Start

🏆 The Cove (Kihei)

Maui's Best Beginner Break

Located in Kalama Beach Park — protected from large swells, small steady waves (2–4 ft), mostly sandy entry. Hub for Kihei surf schools. Facilities: restrooms, showers, picnic areas.

✅ Pros

• Consistent gentle whitewater

• Sandy bottom

• Surf school hub

• Warm, clear water

⚠️ Considerations

• Crowded 8 AM–2 PM

• Shares space with many learners

🌴 Ukumehame (Thousand Peaks)

Best Alternative to The Cove

Between Kihei and Lahaina. Gets its nickname because waves break across a long stretch with nearly a dozen different takeoff spots — naturally spreading out the crowd. Sandy with scattered reef.

✅ Pros

• Naturally uncrowded

• Multiple peaks

• Stunning West Maui Mountain backdrop

• Longer rides

⚠️ Considerations

• Slightly inconsistent waves

• Works best on south swell

👨‍👩‍👧 Launiupoko Beach Park

Best for Families

Just south of Lahaina. Mellow, steady breaks, great facilities (picnic tables, restrooms, showers, protected kid's lagoon). Popular for lessons. Waves 2–5 ft. Sandy with some reef patches.

✅ Pros

• Family atmosphere

• Protected lagoon for kids

• Multiple activity areas

• Community feeling

⚠️ Considerations

• Can get crowded on weekends

• Booties recommended for reef

📈 Intermediate Spots: Stepping Up

Lahaina Breakwall

Works summer AND winter · Intermediate+

Steady, consistent break next to Lahaina Harbor. Waves easy to catch but breaks over shallow reef. Requires knowing how to fall safely and awareness of crowds. Watch for boat traffic near the harbor entrance.

⚠️ Keep head on a swivel — crowded and reef entry

Thousand Peaks (Outer Reefs)

Good summer day · Intermediate+

The outer reefs at Ukumehame can pick up significantly more swell — well overhead on a good day with longer, more powerful sections. An excellent step-up spot where you push limits in a familiar space.

⚠️ Booties required · Shallow reef in places

👀 Spectator Only: Where Legends Ride

🚨 These Waves Are NOT for Visitors to Surf

The following breaks are among the most dangerous in the world. They're reserved for a small group of the world's most elite big-wave specialists. For the rest of us, they offer one of the most amazing shows on Earth.

🌊 Honolua Bay — The World-Class Show

Winter only · Northwest swell · West Maui

During a powerful northwest swell, Honolua Bay transforms into one of the most perfect waves in the world — a fast right-hand point break peeling smoothly along a cliffside for hundreds of yards. The section named "The Cave" is notoriously treacherous. The lineup is packed with Maui's best locals and visiting pros.

Best viewing: Park along the highway and walk to the edge of the bluff. The cliff acts as a natural theater with a stunning view of the entire wave. Bring binoculars.

🌊 Pe'ahi (Jaws) — Witnessing the Impossible

Rare activation · North Shore · Winter only

The holy grail of big-wave surfing. When massive storm-generated swells cross the Pacific, Pe'ahi awakens with waves reaching 60–70 ft in height. Tow-in only — too fast to paddle. The results of a mistake are life-threatening.

How to watch: Pe'ahi Overlook via rough dirt road off Hana Highway between mile markers 13–14. 4WD vehicle strongly recommended. On big days, locals offer truck rides from the highway for a fee.

🤙 The Surfer's Code: Ocean Safety & Etiquette

⚠️ Essential Safety Rules

If in Doubt, Don't Go Out

The most important advice. If waves look bigger than you're comfortable with, or you have a bad feeling — wait for another day. The ocean will always be here.

Never Turn Your Back on the Ocean

Even calm days can produce unexpected sets. Always keep eyes on the horizon, especially when getting in or out of the water.

Understand Rip Currents

If caught: don't panic, don't fight it. Swim parallel to the shoreline until out of the current's pull, then angle back to shore. Rip currents pull out, not under.

🤙 Surf Lineup Etiquette

Right of Way

The surfer closest to the peak (steepest breaking part) has right of way. Always look to your inside before paddling for a wave.

Never Drop In

The worst offense in surfing. Never catch a wave in front of someone who had right of way. If you accidentally do it, pull off immediately and say sorry.

Paddle Out Wide

Never paddle through the impact zone where others are surfing. Paddle out through the channel (deeper area where waves don't break).

🤙 Respect the Locals

Be humble, patient, and watchful. A smile and a simple 'aloha' go a long way. Don't paddle to the main peak and fight for every wave. Wait your turn.

Frequently Asked Questions

Maui surfing — answered by a local

Can beginners surf on Maui? +
Yes — Maui has excellent beginner surf spots and a thriving lesson industry. The Lahaina Breakwall (nicknamed 'Breakwall') and Kihei's Cove Park produce gentle, rolling waves ideal for first-timers. A 2-hour group lesson runs $75–$100 and most beginners stand up on their first lesson. Private lessons ($150–$200) get you more personalized coaching and faster progression.
What are the most famous surf spots on Maui? +
Honolua Bay (West Maui) — a world-class right-hand point break, hosts the Maui Pro WSL event in November/December. Peʻahi (Jaws) — one of the planet's biggest waves, breaks at 30–70+ feet when north swells hit, accessed only by boat or PWC. Ho'okipa Beach Park (North Shore) — legendary windsurfing and surfing destination. Launiupoko — mellow longboard wave, popular with locals and families. Hamoa Beach (near Hāna) — beautiful but can be powerful.
Is it safe to surf Jaws (Peʻahi) on Maui? +
Jaws is one of the most dangerous surf spots in the world, reserved for elite big-wave surfers with years of preparation. The wave breaks in 30–70+ feet and can hold you underwater for multiple wave sets. Even experienced big-wave riders use personal watercraft (jet ski) safety teams. Spectators can view from the Peʻahi cliffs — a dramatic vantage point when it's breaking. Do not attempt to surf Jaws without elite-level training and a full safety team.

What is the best time of year to surf on Maui? +
North Maui (Ho'okipa, Honolua Bay, Jaws) peaks November–March when north Pacific swells arrive. West and south Maui (Lahaina, Kihei, Makena) get south swells June–September. Trade winds (May–September) create choppy surface conditions but consistent waves. For beginners, the shoulder seasons (April–May, October–November) offer less wind and more manageable conditions across most spots.
Do I need to rent a car to access Maui's surf spots? +
Yes, a car is highly recommended for surfing on Maui. Honolua Bay and Ho'okipa are 30+ minutes from Kaanapali and Wailea respectively. Many spots have no public transit access. Some surf schools offer hotel pickup, which is worth the premium if you don't have a car. Surfboard rentals ($20–$40/day) are widely available at surf shops near Lahaina, Paia, and Kihei.
What's the surf etiquette I need to know before getting in the water? +
Hawaii surf culture has strong, enforced etiquette. The surfer closest to the peak has right of way — don't drop in on them. Don't snake (paddle around someone to get priority). Don't hog the lineup. Apologize if you make a mistake. At many local spots, give respect to the regulars and earn your place gradually. Beginners should stick to designated learner areas or go out with an instructor — paddling into a crowded locals' break without skills or awareness is dangerous and disrespectful.
