Let me be clear, as someone who values deep exploration. A 4x4 vehicle on Lanai is not an upgrade. It is your passport. With only 30 miles of paved roads on the entire island, the vast majority of Lanai's most incredible sights are only accessible via rugged, unpaved dirt roads. Without a four-wheel-drive vehicle, you will miss the very soul of the island.
Many of Lanai's signature experiences are off-limits to standard cars. These include:
🏜️ Keahiakawelo (Garden of the Gods)
An otherworldly rock garden that requires navigating a bumpy dirt road.
🚢 Kaiolohia (Shipwreck Beach)
A remote 8-mile stretch of coastline where a 4x4 is essential to reach the trailhead.
🏛️ Kaunolu Village
The historic fishing retreat of King Kamehameha I, located at the end of a challenging dirt track.
🏖️ Polihua Beach
One of Hawaii's most secluded and beautiful beaches, accessible only by a difficult 4x4 road.
The island has a very small fleet of rental Jeeps. They are in extremely high demand. My advice to my own ʻohana is this: Secure your Jeep rental before you book your flight or ferry. This is the single most critical booking you will make. Waiting until you arrive is not an option. They will almost certainly be sold out.
Rental Companies and What to Expect
Several family-run companies offer 4x4 rentals, including Lanai Car Rental, Lanai Cheap Jeeps (also known as Lanai Jeep Rentals), and ABB Rental. When you call a local operator, you're not just getting a vehicle. You're getting an orientation from locals. The owners are often long-time residents who provide invaluable advice on current road conditions. These can change with the weather.

Be sure to heed their warnings:
- Stay off the beach sand
- Be aware of trails that may be closed due to rain
- Drive slowly to avoid damage from thorny kiawe brush
- You will be responsible for any damage to the vehicle
Exploring the Backcountry Roads
Beyond the famous destinations, Lanai offers countless opportunities for discovery along its network of dirt roads. These routes wind through abandoned pineapple fields, past remnants of the plantation era, and into hidden valleys where wild axis deer graze peacefully. Each turn reveals new vistas of neighboring islands or glimpses into the island's layered history.
The key to backcountry exploration is patience and respect. Drive slowly, both for your vehicle's sake and to fully absorb the landscape. Stop often. Pull over when safe to let faster traffic pass. Remember that you're sharing these roads with local residents and workers who know every rock and rut.
Local Tip: Some of my favorite unplanned discoveries have happened while simply following a promising dirt road. An abandoned homestead here, a spectacular viewpoint there, or a grove of ironwood trees offering shade on a hot day. These serendipitous moments often become the most treasured memories of a Lanai visit.
