The majestic Nā Pali Coast is a must-see, but access is highly dependent on the season.
🚤 Boat & Kayak Tours
The absolute best—and for kayaking, the only—time to explore the Nā Pali Coast by water is in the summer, from May through September. During these months, the ocean on the North Shore is typically calm, allowing boats to safely navigate the coastline, explore sea caves, and find clear water for snorkeling. Boat tours that depart from Hanalei only operate during this summer window.
While some tours operate from the more protected Port Allen on the South Shore year-round, winter trips are often subject to cancellation or re-routing due to rough seas.
🥾 Hiking the Kalalau Trail
This world-famous 11-mile trek is best attempted during the dry summer months (May-September). Hiking during the rainy season (November-May) is extremely hazardous. The trail becomes a slick, muddy challenge, and the numerous stream crossings can swell into dangerous, fast-moving rivers with little warning due to flash floods.

If you're just starting out, the best place to learn is on the gentle, rolling waves of the South Shore, like at Poipu Beach, especially during the summer. In the summer, the famously intense North Shore calms down completely, and the small waves in Hanalei Bay become another perfect spot for a first lesson.
🌊 For Experts
The legendary winter swells on the North Shore from November through March are what put Hawaiian surfing on the map. These massive, powerful waves are for experienced and professional surfers only. It's one of the world's premier surfing destinations, but it demands respect and a high level of skill.
A Rainy Day in Paradise: Your Ultimate Options
A passing shower or a rainy day doesn't mean your adventure has to stop. It's simply an opportunity to experience a different side of Kauai.

Immerse yourself in the island's past at the Kauai Museum in Lihue, which tells the story of the island and its people. For a glimpse into the sugar plantation era, take a visit to the historic Grove Farm Museum. On the North Shore, the charming Waioli Mission House in Hanalei offers a look back at 19th-century life.

A rainy day is perfect for a sensory tour. Visit the Kauai Coffee Estate, the largest coffee farm in the U.S., for a tour and tasting. 💧 Embrace the Water
Some activities are even better in the rain! Since you're going to get wet anyway, a rainy day is perfect for Kauai Mountain Tubing, where you float down historic sugar cane irrigation ditches through tunnels and lush landscapes. The Wailua River Cruise to the Fern Grotto is another excellent choice, as the boats are covered and the rain makes the grotto even more magical.
Kalani's Rainy Day Tip: As someone who's lived here my whole life, a rainy day is my excuse to indulge. I'll head to a spa for a traditional lomi lomi massage or spend hours browsing the boutiques at Warehouse 3540 with a warm coffee in hand. The rain makes the island feel even more lush and peaceful.
