East Side Shopping: The Royal Coconut Coast's Finds in Kapaʻa & Lihue

The East Side is the bustling heart of Kauai. It's a dynamic mix of local charm and modern convenience. Here, you can spend the morning exploring unique, historic storefronts of Old Kapaʻa Town. Then spend the afternoon stocking up on everything you need at Lihue's major retail centers. It's the coast that truly has it all.

My tip: The East Side is my go-to for a bit of everything. I'll grab my groceries at Kukui Grove, but then I'll head to Old Kapaʻa Town to browse KIKO for a unique gift. Don't be afraid to park and walk in Kapaʻa. The best shops are discovered on foot and you'll almost certainly stumble upon a hidden gem.

The Charm of Kapaʻa: Old Town & Marketplaces

Kapaʻa is the classic Hawaiian small town, full of character and independent spirit. It's a place to slow down, wander, and discover.

Exploring Historic Old Kapaʻa Town

The main drag of Kapaʻa, Kūhiō Highway, is lined with diverse storefronts and has a wonderfully walkable, laid-back feel. This is where you'll find some of the island's most interesting independent shops.

Must-Visit Shops:

Hip & Curated: KIKO is a standout. This mother-daughter owned boutique offers a beautifully curated collection of upcycled goods, locally made art, unique jewelry, and handcrafted soaps and candles.

Beachy & Bohemian: Find stylish island wear at Seaweed and Sage, known for hibiscus-print kimonos and scented candles. Shipwrecked Kauaʻi carries cool, hard-to-find swimwear labels and connects to the popular Java Kai coffee shop.

Local Institutions: You can't visit Kapaʻa without stopping by Hee Fat General Store, a true classic. For delicious and authentic local meals, grab some of the best poke and plate lunches on the island at Pono Market.

Coconut Marketplace: An Open-Air Oasis

This newly remodeled, open-air shopping village is a hub of activity on the Coconut Coast. It's more than just a shopping center. It's a place to experience island culture with free hula shows by Hālau Hula ʻO Leilani from Wednesday to Saturday. Cultural classes teach you to make a lei or play the ukulele.

Key Stores: The marketplace has a great mix of apparel, gifts, and specialty shops. Highlights include the iconic Crazy Shirts, Cariloha for bamboo products, the Elephant Walk Gift Gallery & Boutique, Kauai Handmade for locally crafted items, and Hawaiian Artisans gallery.

Practical Info:

Address: 4-484 Kuhio Hwy, Kapaʻa

Market: A lively Farmers' Market happens in the front parking lot every Tuesday and Thursday from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

Lihue's Hubs: The Island's Commercial Heart

Lihue is the commercial and governmental center of Kauai. This is where you'll find the island's airport, major government buildings, and its largest concentration of retail stores, including the only big-box stores on Kauai. It's the practical place where visitors and locals stock up on essentials.

Kukui Grove Center: Kauai's Largest Mall

As Kauai's largest and only regional mall, Kukui Grove is an open-air lifestyle center with over 50 stores, a food court, and a new Keiki Korner children's play area.

Anchor Stores: Find familiar names like Macy's, Ross Dress For Less, Target (located at the adjacent Kukui Marketplace), Times Supermarket, and Longs Drugs.

Local Flavor: Among the national retailers, you can find local brands like Ainofea, which stands for "I No Fear." It's a Kauai-based lifestyle apparel brand with a positive message, offering everything from board shorts to aloha shirts with unique local design.

Events: The center hosts the Pau Hana Monday Market every Monday from 3:00 PM to 5:30 PM, featuring fresh produce and local products.

Practical Info:

Address: 3-2600 Kaumualii Hwy, Lihue

Other Lihue Centers

For added convenience, Lihue has several other key shopping spots. Walmart offers one-stop shopping for groceries, apparel, and electronics. Rice Shopping Center is a longtime local hub with a mix of services, shops, and eateries. Anchor Cove, located on picturesque Kalapaki Bay, is a great spot for souvenir shops and restaurants with a view.

Art on the East Side: Galleries and Murals

While Hanapepe may be the art capital, the East Side holds its own with excellent galleries and vibrant public art that adds color and character to the community.

Hawaiian Artisans (Coconut Marketplace): With locations in both Kapaʻa and Koloa, this gallery is fantastic for finding a wide variety of local art, jewelry, and handcrafted gifts.

Kauai Society of Artists (Kukui Grove Center): This non-profit gallery is a dynamic space showcasing member artists' work. Exhibitions change frequently and feature everything from paintings and sculpture to pottery and mixed media.

Kauai Museum (Lihue): The museum itself is a treasure trove of Hawaiian artifacts and art. Its gift shop, "māhele at Kauaʻi Museum," is one of the best places on the island to buy authentic, high-quality crafts, books, and even rare Niʻihau shell lei. The museum also offers cultural classes in traditional arts like weaving and lei making.

Public Art: As you drive through Kapaʻa, keep an eye out for the colorful Kapaa Murals. These large-scale public artworks brighten the town's buildings and make for great photo opportunities, showcasing the community's creative spirit.
