Wailua River State Park: Exploring from the Road

You don't need a kayak to witness the power of Wailua. Some of its most breathtaking sights are just a short drive away. They're perfect for a quick visit or for those who prefer to stay on solid ground. Here's how to find two of Kauaʻi's most iconic and easily accessible waterfalls.

Wailua Falls Viewpoint (The "Fantasy Island" Falls)

Instantly recognizable to many, Wailua Falls is famous for its appearance in the opening credits of the classic 1970s TV show Fantasy Island. This stunning waterfall often splits into two tiers, cascading between 80 and 170 feet into a deep pool below, depending on recent rainfall.

Accessibility

This is one of the easiest-to-visit waterfalls on the island. The viewpoint is located right at the end of Maalo Road (Highway 583), just a few miles inland from Lihue. There is a small parking lot, and you can see the falls from your car. But it's worth getting out for an unobstructed view. No hiking is required.

📸 Photography Pro-Tip

For the best photo, visit in the morning. The angle of the sun frequently creates a beautiful, vibrant rainbow in the waterfall's powerful mist.

⚠️ Critical Safety Warning

In ancient times, Hawaiian warriors would leap from the top of the falls to prove their bravery. Today, this act is illegal, incredibly dangerous, and has tragically resulted in visitor deaths.

You will see unofficial trails leading down to the base from the lookout. These trails are officially closed, unmaintained, and extremely hazardous. Please do not attempt to hike down. Enjoy the spectacular view safely from the designated lookout.

📺 Famous Appearance

Featured in the opening credits of the 1970s TV show "Fantasy Island," making it one of Hawaii's most recognizable waterfalls.

📏 Height Varies

The falls range from 80 to 170 feet depending on water flow, often splitting into two beautiful cascades.

🚗 Easy Access

🌈 Rainbow Viewing

Morning visits often reward photographers with vibrant rainbows formed in the waterfall's mist.

ʻOpaekaʻa Falls Viewpoint ("Rolling Shrimp" Falls)

A few miles up Kuamoo Road (Highway 580), you'll find the lookout for ʻOpaekaʻa Falls. This majestic 151-foot waterfall cascades down a sheer cliff face into a hidden pool. Its name translates to "rolling shrimp," a nod to the freshwater crustaceans that were once abundant in the stream.

Accessibility

Like Wailua Falls, this viewpoint is extremely accessible. There is a large, well-maintained roadside lookout with ample parking, public restrooms, and picnic tables.

🤫 The "Secret" Second View

Here's a tip many visitors miss. After you've admired the falls, carefully walk across the street from the parking lot. There is another lookout platform that offers one of the most stunning panoramic views of the entire Wailua River Valley below. It's a breathtaking perspective that puts the whole area into context.

📸 Photography Pro-Tip

The best time to photograph the falls is typically in the late morning, when the sun is fully illuminating the cascade and the surrounding valley.

⚠️ Safety Warning

You may see or hear about a "hidden trail" to the base of ʻOpaekaʻa Falls. This trail is not official, not maintained, and extremely dangerous. Access is illegal and ill-advised. Please stick to the safe, beautiful views from the official lookouts.
