When the Ocean Rests
Flat-Day Adventures and the Spirit of Aloha

Kalani MillerEven in Paradise, the Ocean Needs to Rest
Even in paradise, the ocean needs to rest. But a flat day on the Big Island doesn't mean the adventure stops. Sometimes, it's the perfect excuse to explore a different side of Hawaiʻi, or even to island-hop and see what our sister island, Oahu, has to offer.
If the surf report isn't cooperating and you still want an adrenaline rush, I tell my friends to check out Coral Crater Adventure Park on Oahu. It's a different kind of drop, but just as thrilling.
Adrenaline Adventures on Oahu
They have everything to get your heart pumping, from ziplines that send you flying through the jungle canopy to off-road ATVs for tearing up the trails and a wild adventure tower with climbing walls and a 50-foot freefall. It's a guaranteed way to cure the flat-day blues.
🌲 Zipline Adventures
Soar through jungle canopies with breathtaking views. Multiple zipline courses available across the Big Island and neighboring islands.
🏍️ ATV Tours
Tear up volcanic trails and explore remote areas of the Big Island. Perfect for getting your adrenaline fix when the waves are flat.
🧗♂️ Adventure Towers
Challenge yourself with climbing walls, rope courses, and thrilling freefall experiences that rival any wave ride.
🚁 Helicopter Tours
See the Big Island from above - active lava flows, hidden waterfalls, and dramatic coastlines from a bird's eye view.
Understanding Our Modern History
Surfing connects us to Hawaiʻi's royal past, but to understand our modern history, a visit to Pearl Harbor on Oahu is essential. For a break from the water, immerse yourself in history with a solemn and educational tour. Standing on the USS Arizona Memorial, above the resting place of 1,177 sailors, is a powerful, humbling experience that stays with you forever. It's a moment of reflection that gives you a deeper appreciation for the peace and freedom we have to enjoy these beautiful islands. It's something I believe everyone who visits Hawaiʻi should see.
Pearl Harbor Experience
This sacred site offers a profound perspective on history and sacrifice. The experience includes the USS Arizona Memorial, museums, and authentic World War II artifacts. It's a powerful reminder of the events that shaped modern Hawaii and America.

Leave It Better Than You Found It
Riding a wave is an incredible feeling, but here on the Big Island, it's just the beginning. When you paddle out into our waters, you become part of a lineage that stretches back for centuries. You're a small part of a very big story. A successful session here isn't measured by how many waves you caught, but by the connection you made—to the ocean, to the culture, and to the community.
So as you explore our shores, I ask you to carry that understanding with you. Surf with aloha. Respect the locals who call this water home. Respect the reef that gives us these waves.
Mālama ka ʻĀina - Care for the Land and Ocean
Pack out everything you pack in, and maybe even a little extra. Mālama ka ʻāina—care for the land and the ocean. Leave this special place better than you found it, so that the next generation of surfers, both local and visitor, can feel the same magic that we are so fortunate to experience today.
Protect the Reef
- • Use reef-safe sunscreen
- • Don't stand on coral
- • Avoid touching marine life
- • Report pollution
Respect the Culture
- • Learn basic Hawaiian words
- • Understand sacred sites
- • Support local businesses
- • Listen to kūpuna wisdom
Share the Aloha

- • Give back to community
Mahalo and See You in the Lineup
The ocean has been my teacher, my playground, and my sanctuary for my entire life. Every wave is a gift, every session a chance to connect with something larger than ourselves. When you paddle out on the Big Island, you're not just catching waves—you're joining a tradition that honors the ocean, respects the land, and celebrates the spirit of aloha that makes these islands so special.
