The Perfect Microclimate

Hōlualoa sits at the epicenter of the Kona Coffee Belt. A narrow strip of land on the slopes of Hualalai and Mauna Loa that is one of the most famous coffee-growing regions in the world. The unique combination of high elevation (800-2,500 feet), rich volcanic soil, sunny mornings, and misty, rainy afternoons creates the perfect microclimate for the delicate Coffea arabica bean.

The story of Kona coffee begins in 1828, when the missionary Samuel Ruggles planted the first cuttings here. But the industry as we know it was forged by the hands of Japanese immigrant families in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. When large plantations failed after the world coffee market crashed in 1899, the land was divided into small 3- to 5-acre parcels. These were leased to these hardworking families. They established the tradition of small, family-run farms that continues to this day. A legacy of meticulous, hand-picked quality.

Touring a coffee farm here is more than just a tasting. It's a chance to connect with that history and meet the families carrying on the tradition. With hundreds of farms in the area, choosing one can be daunting. Here's my insider's guide to finding your perfect cup.
