World-Famous Coffee & Mountain Culture

Just above the sunny coast, the cooler, cloud-kissed slopes of Hualālai volcano are home to the world-famous Kona Coffee Belt and charming artist communities.

The Kona Coffee Belt: A Journey from Seed to Cup

You can't come to Kona without tasting the coffee. The unique combination of rich volcanic soil, high elevation, and the perfect balance of sun and rain creates a coffee bean that is smooth, rich, and sought after worldwide. Taking a farm tour is the best way to understand the story behind your cup.

📚 For the History Buff: Kona Coffee Living History Farm

This is my top recommendation for anyone who loves stories as much as coffee. Run by the Kona Historical Society, this is the only living history coffee farm in the United States. You're not just touring a farm; you're stepping back in time to the 1920s. Costumed interpreters share the daily lives of the Uchida family and other Japanese immigrants who pioneered Kona's coffee industry, demonstrating how they milled and dried the beans by hand. It's a fascinating and moving experience.

For the Coffee Connoisseur: Award-Winning Plantations

Greenwell Farms

Established in 1850, this is one of Kona's oldest and largest working farms. They offer excellent free guided tours throughout the day, making it a fantastic and accessible option for learning about the entire seed-to-cup process.

Hula Daddy

For those serious about their coffee, Hula Daddy is a must. They are known for their award-winning, small-batch roasts and offer in-depth, paid tours that are more like a master class in specialty coffee.

Mountain Thunder

Tucked away high up on the slopes of Hualālai, Mountain Thunder offers a different perspective. They also provide free tours and have a beautiful, lush setting that feels a world away from the coast.

In the heart of coffee country lies the sleepy, charming town of Hōlualoa. This is the artistic soul of Kona, a place where art galleries and small studios are housed in historic, plantation-era buildings. The Donkey Mill Art Center is a fantastic community hub, offering classes and showcasing local artists. If you're here on the first Friday of the month, the village comes alive with its "First Friday" art walk, a wonderful local event with music, food, and art.
