Kohala's climate and ocean conditions change throughout the year. Understanding these seasonal patterns helps you plan activities and set proper expectations for your visit. I've learned to adjust my family's activities based on the time of year to make the most of each season's unique opportunities.
Winter in Kohala (December - March)
Winter brings cooler temperatures, more frequent rain, and larger ocean swells to Kohala. Average temperatures range from the mid-70s to low 80s rather than the mid-80s of summer. Rain showers pass through more frequently, especially in the afternoons and evenings.
Winter's Crown Jewel: Whale Watching
Whale watching becomes a major attraction during winter months. Humpback whales migrate to Hawaiian waters to breed and give birth. The Kohala Coast offers some of the best land-based whale watching in Hawaii. Find a spot at Lapakahi State Historical Park or the Kapa'a Beach Park and watch for breaches, tail slaps, and spouts offshore.
The whales typically arrive in November and stay through April. Peak viewing happens from January through March when the population is largest. Early morning and late afternoon provide the best viewing conditions when the ocean is calmer and light conditions are optimal.
Binoculars improve your whale watching experience significantly. The hotel concierge desks often loan binoculars to guests. Many hotels also offer whale watching talks by marine biologists during peak season.
