Familiar, because I've seen it a hundred times on screen. I can almost hear the lush orchestra of South Pacific, filmed right here in 1957. Its vision of an enchanted paradise burned into the world's mind. But it also feels distant. I've seen this bay through another lens—Alexander Payne's The Descendants. In that film, this same shore wasn't fantasy. It was a place of family pain, land fights, and the messy heart of modern Hawaiʻi.
