Planning Your Complete Hawaiian Adventure

After you've immersed yourself in the tranquility of the gardens, you might be ready for a different kind of adventure. Kauai and our neighboring islands offer a lifetime of experiences. Here are a few of my other can't-miss recommendations to round out your trip.

For the Thrill-Seekers: Coral Crater Adventure Park

If the serenity of the gardens leaves you craving an adrenaline rush, the best place on the islands is Coral Crater Adventure Park on Oahu. It's a fantastic contrast to a day spent with the plants. Their 6-line zipline course soars through the jungle. Their technical ATV tracks will have you kicking up some serious dirt. Their Adventure Tower, with its 18-element obstacle course and a 50-foot freefall, is guaranteed to get your heart pounding. A day trip to Oahu for this adventure is well worth it for anyone seeking high-octane fun.

For the History Buffs: Pearl Harbor

To truly understand Hawaii, you must connect with its history, both ancient and modern. A visit to Pearl Harbor on Oahu is a profound and essential experience for any visitor to our islands. While it requires a flight from Kauai, walking the solemn grounds of the USS Arizona Memorial is powerful. Standing on the surrender deck of the Battleship Missouri provides a tangible connection to a pivotal moment in world history. This unfolded right here in our waters. There are many excellent tour options available that can handle all the logistics for a day trip from Kauai.

More to Explore on Kauai's South Shore

You don't have to leave the South Shore to continue your adventure. The area around the gardens is packed with incredible sights.

💦 Spouting Horn

Located directly across the street from the garden's visitor center, this dramatic blowhole shoots seawater high into the air. Waves crash into the lava shelf creating this spectacular show. It's a quick but spectacular stop.

🏖️ Poipu Beach Park

One of Hawaii's most famous beaches, Poipu is perfect for snorkeling in its calm, protected waters. It's also one of the best places on the island to see Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles (honu) sunning themselves on the sand.

Distance: 3 miles (5 minutes)

🥾 Mahaʻulepu Heritage Trail

For a stunning coastal hike, follow this trail from Shipwreck Beach. It winds along limestone cliffs and secluded coves. The trail offers breathtaking ocean views.

Distance: 5 miles (10 minutes)

🏪 Old Koloa Town

Take a stroll back in time through the charming, plantation-era storefronts of Old Koloa Town. It's a great place to find unique souvenirs. You can also learn about the history of Hawaii's first successful sugar plantation.

Distance: 4 miles (7 minutes)

The Living Legacy of Lāwaʻi Valley

The Allerton and McBryde Gardens are so much more than just a collection of beautiful plants. They are a living, breathing chronicle of Kauai's history. They are a love story, written in landscape and stone by two men who found refuge and inspiration in this valley. They are a critical sanctuary, a botanical ark safeguarding the future of Hawaii's most precious and endangered species. And they are an enduring piece of cinematic magic. A place where the primeval world of dinosaurs still feels tantalizingly close.

Here in the Lāwaʻi Valley, art and science do not just coexist. They nurture one another. The artistic vision of the Allertons created a masterpiece that would, through their philanthropy, give rise to a scientific mission of global importance. It is a legacy of beauty and preservation, intertwined and inseparable.

The gardens represent something larger than themselves. They show us what's possible when people care deeply about the world around them. When they're willing to invest time, money, and passion into creating something beautiful and meaningful. When they understand that preservation and beauty can work hand in hand.

Every visitor who walks these paths becomes part of this story. Every photo shared, every story told, every moment of wonder experienced here helps ensure that this legacy continues. The gardens inspire people to care about conservation. They show that science and art can create something greater than either could achieve alone.

The work continues today. Scientists at McBryde are still rappelling down cliffs to save endangered plants. They're still discovering new species and learning how to protect them. Artists and landscapers at Allerton are still maintaining the vision of two men who saw beauty in an empty valley and decided to fill it with wonder.

My final tip? At some point during your visit, put your camera down for a while. Find a quiet bench in one of Allerton's rooms or by the stream in McBryde. Just listen. The story of this valley is all around you. It's in the rustle of the bamboo. It's in the pulse of the fountains. It's in the silent strength of the trees. It's a story you'll carry with you long after you leave our island.

When you walk through these gardens, you're not just seeing plants and sculptures. You're experiencing the dreams of Queen Emma, who sought solace in this valley. You're walking through the love story of Robert Allerton and John Gregg. You're witnessing the dedication of scientists who refuse to let species disappear forever. You're standing where Hollywood magic was made. You're part of a story that connects ancient Hawaiian wisdom with modern conservation science.

This is why I keep coming back to Lāwaʻi Valley. This is why I bring my own keiki here. This is why I wanted to share this story with you. Because in a world that often feels divided between progress and preservation, between art and science, between past and future, this valley shows us another way. A way where all these things can coexist and strengthen each other.

The gardens are open every day, but they're never quite the same twice. The light changes. The plants grow. The seasons shift. New research discoveries are made. New visitors arrive with their own stories and perspectives. The legacy continues to evolve.

Come discover your own chapter in the story of Lāwaʻi Valley. Come see where Jurassic Park was filmed. Come learn about plants that exist nowhere else on Earth. Come experience the artistic vision of two men who transformed a valley into a masterpiece. Come understand what it means to preserve something precious for future generations.
