To help you make the most of your time, I've designed two of my favorite day trips, one centered on the upcountry charm of Waimea and the other on the cultural heart of Hilo. These itineraries weave together food, history, and natural beauty for a truly memorable experience.
A Saturday Foodie Adventure in Waimea
Waimea is the soul of paniolo country and the epicenter of the island's farm-to-table movement. This itinerary is a celebration of that heritage, blending the freshest market finds with a deep dive into ranching history.
🌅 7:30 AM - Rise and Shine at the Market
Start your day at the Waimea Town Market at Parker School. The morning air is crisp and cool. My first stop is always for a hot coffee and a freshly baked pastry to enjoy while I browse.
🥖 8:00 AM - 10:00 AM - Gather Your Picnic
This is your chance to assemble the ultimate foodie picnic. Talk to the vendors and gather your supplies: a loaf of artisan sourdough from Sandwich Isle Bread Company, some local goat cheese, sweet Waimea strawberries, and maybe some smoked fish or grass-fed beef jerky for protein.
🏛️ 10:30 AM - Step into Paniolo History
A short drive takes you to the historic Parker Ranch headquarters. Take a tour of the two historic homes, Puuopelu and Mana Hale, to immerse yourself in the fascinating legacy of the Hawaiian cowboys and the Parker family, which has deep ties to Hawaiian royalty.
🌸 12:30 PM - An Upcountry Picnic
Find a scenic spot to enjoy the incredible meal you sourced from the market. A beautiful option is Church Row Park, where the town's historic churches stand. If you visit in early February, you'll be treated to the breathtaking sight of the cherry trees in full bloom during the annual Waimea Cherry Blossom Heritage Festival.
🌅 Afternoon - Scenic Drive to the Sea
For a stunning change of scenery, take a drive down the winding Kohala Mountain Road. The views are breathtaking as you descend from the green pastures of Waimea to the sun-baked lava fields of the coast. End your day at one of the spectacular Kohala Coast beaches, like Hāpuna or Mauna Kea, for a world-class sunset.
A Wednesday Immersion in Hilo
Hilo is the Big Island's lush, green heart, a city of resilience, culture, and stunning natural beauty. This itinerary combines the vibrant energy of its famous market with the powerful stories and cascading waterfalls that define the region.
🏪 8:00 AM - Dive into the Hilo Farmers Market
Arrive at the Hilo Farmers Market ready to explore. Wednesday is a "big market day," so the energy is electric and the selection is at its peak.
🌺 8:00 AM - 10:00 AM - A Feast for the Senses
My strategy here is to engage all the senses. Buy an armful of fragrant tropical flowers—you won't believe how affordable they are. Sample exotic fruits you've never seen before and grab a fresh coconut to sip on as you wander the aisles.
🍱 11:00 AM - A Classic Plate Lunch
Head to the market's bustling food court and choose your plate lunch adventure from one of the many vendors. Take your meal to the nearby Liliʻuokalani Gardens, a beautiful Japanese garden, and enjoy your lunch with peaceful views of Hilo Bay and Coconut Island.
🌊 12:30 PM - Understand Hilo's Story
Walk through historic downtown Hilo to the Pacific Tsunami Museum. This powerful museum tells the story of the devastating tsunamis that reshaped the city and showcases the incredible resilience of its people. It provides a profound context for the Hilo you see today.
🌈 2:30 PM - Chase a Waterfall
A very short drive from downtown takes you to Wailuku River State Park, home to the iconic Rainbow Falls. If you're lucky and the sun is out after a morning shower, you'll see the beautiful rainbow that gives the 80-foot waterfall its name. It's the perfect, refreshing end to a day in Hilo.
Adventures Beyond the Big Island
The thrill of discovering a new fruit at the Makuʻu market is one kind of adventure, but I know some of you are looking for a different kind of rush. Many visitors travel between islands, and if your Hawaiian journey takes you to Oʻahu, I have a couple of recommendations I always share with my friends.
⚡ For the Adrenaline Junkie
If you're seeking a high-energy thrill, I always point my friends to Coral Crater Adventure Park. After a few days of relaxing on the beach, it's the perfect way to get your heart pumping. Their ziplines let you soar through the jungle, the ATVs kick up some serious dirt on rugged trails, and the Adventure Tower, with its 18 different challenges and a 50-foot freefall, will definitely test your nerve.
🏛️ For a Dose of History
Just as the markets tell the story of the island's land and people today, it's essential to understand the stories that shaped all of Hawaiʻi. No trip is truly complete without connecting to our past. The tours at Pearl Harbor on Oʻahu offer a profound and essential look into a pivotal moment in American and world history. Visiting the USS Arizona Memorial and the other historic sites is a deeply moving experience.
Wandering through a Big Island farmers market is to experience our home in its purest form. It's a direct line to the volcanic soil, the abundant rain, the warm sun, and the hands that cultivate the bounty of this land. These markets are so much more than a place of commerce; they are vibrant, living hubs of community, culture, and connection. They are where the spirit of aloha is not just a word, but something you can taste, see, and feel.
So, I encourage you to step out of your comfort zone. Talk story with the woman who grew your mangoes. Ask the woodworker about the koa tree his family has worked with for generations. Try the fruit that looks the strangest—it might just become your new favorite. By doing so, you are not just a visitor; you are participating in the life of the island.
