Everything you need to know for the perfect day at Kahaluʻu
Written by a Local Expert
Kalani MillerGetting to Kahaluʻu Beach Park is straightforward. The address is 78-6702 Alii Drive, Kailua-Kona, HI 96740. From Kona town, head south on Alii Drive for about 5 miles. The park sits right along the coast, and you'll see the pavilions and parking area on your right.
The park has a delayed opening until 10:00 AM on the first Thursday of every month for maintenance. Plan around this if you're visiting during the first week of the month.
Even more important is the annual closure in May. The entire bay closes to all water activities for about one week to allow the cauliflower coral to spawn undisturbed. This conservation measure, started in 2018, has been incredibly successful. The number of coral colonies has grown from just six in 2017 to hundreds today.
The specific dates change each year, but closure is typically mid-May. Check with the park before your visit if you're traveling during this time. This closure has allowed coral colonies to multiply from 6 to hundreds!
The park offers everything you need for a comfortable day at the beach. There are clean restrooms and outdoor showers for rinsing off saltwater. Multiple picnic pavilions provide shade, and each has tables and BBQ grills if you want to cook lunch. The facilities are ADA accessible, making the park welcoming for visitors with mobility challenges.
Entry to the park itself is free, but parking now requires payment. The fee structure covers a 4-hour block, which is usually plenty of time for a good snorkel session and lunch. Bring quarters or be prepared to pay with a credit card at the parking stations.
You have two options for snorkel gear: bring your own or rent locally. I always recommend renting if you're flying in—it saves luggage space and ensures you get properly maintained equipment. Plus, local shops know the conditions here and can give you gear that works best in Hawaiian waters.
